Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Matteel Knowles.
Hi Dr. Matteel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am Dr. Matteel Knowles; my business is called MatteelSpeaks; I am a transformational coach, a public speaker, and an author. Transformations have defined my story in major areas of my life. I am passionate about helping others do the same. I have also worked as an educator for over 25 years and am currently serving as Vice President for Student Services at Greenville Technical College in Greenville, South Carolina.
I was the first in my family to go to college and kept going until I earned a Ph.D. in my forties. I also worked as a secretary for the first ten years of my career and advanced into executive leadership roles. I was in a very unhealthy marriage for 17 years, got divorced, and remarried the perfect man for me. I have overcome foreclosure and credit card debt and lost 180 pounds naturally. I got baptized as an adult in 2018.
I have such gratitude for the changes I’ve been blessed to experience in my life. I developed a five-step transformation model that can be used to help people reach their goals and change any area of their lives. I want everyone to have the chance to become the best version of themselves! I am working with Writing Coach Lanette Kincaide to finish my book, which will be available by February 14, 2023.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I had to learn to believe in myself. My education is one example. By the time I got serious about finishing my college education, I had been out of high school for more than ten years and had earned more than 100 credit hours but had not earned a credential. Fortunately, a mentor believed in me and encouraged me to continue. By that time, I was married and working full-time. I had to drive more than an hour to take classes for my master’s degree and Ph.D. it required a lot of sacrifices in the evenings and on the weekend, and my marriage was a real challenge by that time. I gained a lot of weight during this time and had to overcome low self-esteem.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known as a higher education practitioner, and I am an experienced transformational coach and public speaker. As an educator, I work in the technical/community college sector. I have worked in the South Carolina Technical College System for over 25 years. I serve on multiple boards and have leadership roles in various professional associations. In addition to my service in higher education, I built MatteelSpeaks. I am known for the signature topic of transformation. Through that business, I serve as a transformational coach, a public speaker, and an author. I have served as a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator for multiple professional and community organizations and coached several individuals to help them meet their personal and career goals.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
There are many ways to find a mentor. The two ways that have worked for me are for it to happen organically or to be proactive and approach someone. When it has happened organically, it has usually been serendipitous. In those situations, it has proven valuable to be open to new people and new experiences because you never know who God will send into your life to help you. Some of my best mentorship relationships have happened that way. The other way I have found a mentor is to approach someone with knowledge or experience in an area where I want to grow. I reach out to that person and request a meeting — either formal or over coffee. Sometimes reaching out means hiring someone. I have always benefitted from hiring professional coaches to help me grow in general or in a specific area where I have a goal.
