Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Petway II.
Hi Richard, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always felt a great passion for music and clothes. Music growing up was my place of refuge. I turned it out when things got rough by singing or playing music. My family is a Christian-based family since my father is a Bishop now, so music was always a part of me. It increasingly became a love language of hope, passion, hatred, uncontrollable tears, and a handful of other sensitivities. Travis Cherry and I had been friends for a minute, and although we both loved the music, we were not fully compatible in the sense of skill. But Travis and I had something people could only dream of, Hunger. And because of that, I began teaching him more and more about what I knew about singing, and he soaked it up, and it helped him become the ICON he is now—we then found two other members and formed the group. “Legacy.” Unfortunately, we sounded too much like Jodeci and decided to make a drastic change, let the latter two members go, and eventually went with what you all know as Simplee Uneek which now included Tommy Canady and District Judge Damion McCullers. As a member of Simplee Uneek, I wrote and played on almost everything, along with Travis Cherry. We became that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis tandem. When people asked for us to put together harmonies and write music, it always led to him and me because we had that natural and raw talent you couldn’t grow. Fast forward to now, and because of him, I have produced and composed numerous artists’ albums, from Case to Demetria McKinney. I currently own Crystal Entertainment Sound group and GreenRoom Studios in Knightdale, NC, where I collaborate with Travis Cherry and the PurpleRoom.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Bumps hmmm. Taking that journey to make it in Atlanta was a jump, especially since most singers were going up north then. Every step was a bump, in my opinion. We as a group had challenges because as you live with guys, you tend to see people’s behavior. Travis made it easy for me, and I never had issues like that while singing together.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love music. I am being a Music Producer and producing for many great artists like Case and Demetria McKinney and up-and-coming artists like Za Ahkil. There is more in store, no matter the genre.
