Today we’d like to introduce you to Phylicia Barr.
Hi Phylicia. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I had a creative side; throughout my life, I have been drawn to the arts but never quite found my niche. After I had my first son, I purchased my first DSLR off the Facebook market, so I started playing around and learning. Photography sometimes felt overwhelming, but I knew I enjoyed taking pictures and capturing those special moments. I am now a mom of three boys who grow so fast, and taking photos is my way of slowing down time for just a moment. I fell in love with being behind the camera and realized all of the opportunities photography could provide me with. After discussing it with my husband, I decided to go for it. In November 2019, I posted a flyer for Christmas mini session online and went for it. I was super nervous, and a ton of things went wrong! I’m thankful to have been working with some awesome clients who were very patient with me, so I got through it. Along the way, I have had tremendous support from my family and friends, from booking sessions to referrals and all-around encouragement to keep going. I have also met some amazing photographers who have mentored me in the business. Photography is without a doubt “my thing” ! Most importantly, it gives me an outlet for my everyday life and job.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have faced some obstacles; being an entrepreneur is tricky, especially when juggling having a full-time job and 3 kids. I’ll be the first to tell you that I am not the most organized person, so balancing my schedules and finding the best way to operate has not been an easy task! In addition to the general woes of business, I have battled with imposter syndrome and self-doubt. To this day, I have to talk myself into posting my work and promoting my business.

I’m open to all types of photography! I love to be challenged, so when a client comes to me with something new, I am always willing and ready! The main focus of PhyliciaBarr Photography is family and lifestyle photos; that’s why. I started capturing life’s special moments and want to give that gift to my clients. I pride myself on connecting with my clients and creating a unique experience!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
There are a lot of amazing places to shoot in the triangle I love exploring and finding new photoshoot locations! Hmm, dislike, there’s not a lot that I dislike about Raleigh but I do hate traffic !!!
