Conversations with Cornell Mapp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cornell Mapp.

Hi Cornell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started off releasing music my freshman year of college and began to see a buzz with it with my first released song.

From there, I started performing at numerous locations alongside a couple of other A&T artists. During my sophomore year in college, I started to think to myself, “why isn’t there a platform for artists in college similar to NCAA”. I reached out to my two co-founders Malique Hawkins and Jaden Frazier, and from there, the 1891 Hot 10 was born.

The 1891 Hot 10 started off as an idea to create and release a mixtape with 10 popular North Carolina A&T artists.

This idea then turned into a record label with the purpose to help NCAT artists expand their musical platform while continuing their educational journey. Besides this being NCAT’s first record label, new NCAT artists are allowed on the list each year which makes this record label unique.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road has had plenty of obstacles. Getting our artists out there while working with a school schedule myself has been challenging.

Also, all investments in the brand started off from the money we had in our pockets at the time, which was another obstacle we faced. Thankfully, we have overcome and will continue to overcome the obstacles that come through hard work and dedication.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist and an entrepreneur. I specialize in artist development and also creating music. I am known for the music I make and the label I created.

I am most proud of creating this record label while being a sophomore in college. What sets me apart is the fact that I am on both the creative and business sides of the music industry.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
People might not know that I am half Belizean.
