Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Schultz.
Serena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I can not remember how exactly I fell into modeling but it started as a teenager, it only lasted for a couple of years at that time. I always knew I had a passion for animals but it really hit me when I rescued my first dog, Buddy. A year or so after high school I began working in the veterinary field and fell in love with getting to work with animals both in the clinic and with wildlife rehabilitation. Fast forward several years and my now husband, who is in the Army at the time, deploys and I need something to pass my time. It just so happened that my mom was taking photography classes at the time and needed me for some photo projects. One day I am online and see a photo at a really cool location so I reach out to the photographer regarding it which turns into a shoot. That is when I was reintroduced to the creative community and once again fell in love with it. I love the people I get to meet and the art we get to make. I am now lucky enough to call some of those people my friends.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Early on I was pretty naïve and came across some poor excuses for modeling agencies and creepy photographers but I have been fortunate enough to never really be in any danger. I always approach meeting new people with kindness and openness but now make sure my safety is number one. If there is not a trusted reference I think it is important when first meeting someone new to meet in a public space or bring an escort (or both).
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I used to work in the veterinary field but am now a stay at home mom to my one year old son. I have been modeling again for a few years now. I like to consider myself very professional and well rounded so I do not think I fall into any particular genre. I love getting to try new and creative concepts that expand my experience. Some of my favorite work is the more unique work I have done, I especially enjoyed the recycled children’s tent dress by the amazing Ciara Kelley.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The pandemic has been hard on the creative community. There was a time where I was not able to shoot in person so I was doing virtual shoots. I was so grateful when I was able to do in person shoots again. In the beginning everyone was very cautious and would wear masks and social distance but things appear to be getting closer to a new normal. I do not think things will ever again be the way they used to be.
