Hidden Gems: Meet Hytham Mouna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hytham Mouna.

Hi Hytham, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated from the University of South Carolina with a pharmacy degree in 1988 and was fortunate to work at Wake Forest Baptist Health as a compounding pharmacist for over 34 years. While keeping my job at the hospital, I was able to launch Med Solutions Compounding Pharmacy in 2008 and a home infusion pharmacy by the name of Carolina IV Solutions in 2012. Currently, I am in the process of starting an FDA-registered 503 b outsourcing facility to help and participate in solving national drug shortages and provide other needed IV compounded medications to clinics and hospitals. My journey has been and is still full of passion and excitement about being able to customize medications based on patient’s needs, but this would have not been possible without having been lucky to learn so much from my experience working at Wake Forest Baptist Health and the many long hours that averaged 70 hours a week that I have worked for most of my pharmacy career! Finally, I would not forget the sacrifices my wife Noma Mouna, PharmD and the rest of the family made for me to achieve this kind of success in the pharmacy profession.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
And of course, this has not been a smooth ride! There have been many challenges and difficulties in meeting the ever more demanding standards of the profession! Our goal has been and is still not only to meet those standards but also to exceed them in order to serve and protect the patient!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Med Solutions Compounding Pharmacy, we provide needed sterile and non sterile medications that are not commercially available to patients! We spend a lot of time counseling patients about their meds! And at Carolina IV Solutions, when patients leave the hospital and get discharged on IV medications, we prepare these drugs and deliver them to their homes with a nurse to teach them on how to infuse and administer them! When hospitals and clinics need outsourced compounded medications, Unica Pharma will help design, validate, and produce these medications!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Going to the beach and playing in the sand with the rest of brothers and sisters!
