Life & Work with Alicia Marie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Marie.

Hi Alicia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been singing and writing my entire life. Probably since I was about 8 years old. There was always a lot going on around me so I learned to use the writing as therapy early. I would just zone out in my own world. I moved to North Carolina from New York in high school and became heavily involved in the spoken word poetry scene with a group called Sacrificial Poets for many years which lead to the discovery that I could rap. I rapped and sang alongside two dope individuals for years in a group we called The Big Chill and that was my introduction to true music creation and performance on a more professional level. The arts really molded my entire life but I was always going back and forth on effort and consistency due to getting caught up in the madness and influences around me. I got pregnant at 19 and decided to let everything go to pursue a typical career to take care of my child. Years went by and I continued to write but it wasn’t until I experienced an intense downfall a bit later on that I really decided to take my art seriously again. Long story short, art has always been my safe place and once I decided to trust in it again I could feel myself effortlessly aligning. So I decided to continue and now I’m on a mission.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha. Never smooth. I’ve lost everything I’ve ever had a couple of times. I’ve had to do things I never thought and seen things I’d never wanted to see but it’s a part of the journey. Everyone has a different path. Some people get the luxury of never having to sacrifice pieces of themselves to survive but end up becoming completely disconnected individuals. I carry pain but I see people and I feel people. When you understand the feeling of being without and you don’t allow it to completely harden your spirit, you see the world different. I am grateful for every step that brings me closer to my purpose, even the ones I thought would take me out. Every day is a learning experience. I feel as though my road is building me up to prepare me for my purpose. I just try to keep that in mind.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper, singer, songwriter, poet, anything I want to be. Ha. But I’m known probably more for rapping at this point but I plan to switch things up a little bit soon. I’m just proud that I’m here. I’m proud that I made it back to this place. I’m proud that I followed through. What sets me apart is that I’m just real. I’m a genuine ass human being. I’m not here to clique up or impress anyone. I’m here to create what I love and vibe out with everyone that feels me.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t allow people to speak fear into your vision. A lot of people can’t do a lot of things. But someone has done it. Do what you feel and keep doing what you feel. Especially if it aligns you.
