Conversations with Zoysia Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoysia Gray.

Zoysia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My love for makeup started in 2013. I was watching Jackie Aina on YouTube, and I thought to myself, I can do that!!

After watching a few more well-known YouTubers, I decided to buy the basic necessities and I got started. I used to practice day in and day out on different makeup looks, remove it when I didn’t like it, and start again lol I would do this over and over again, until one day I just got better.

It was definitely the growth for me. By 2016, I felt confident in my skills to start accepting clients. I was not the best makeup artist by any means, but I was very passionate about perfecting my craft. Now here in 2022, I have had major growth. I’m still not where I want to be, but I am much closer than I was, and for that I am thankful.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Whew, it has been a struggle, to say the least.

One of my major struggles was not necessarily involving a skill set, but more so confidence in myself. I would beat myself up a lot because I felt I wasn’t as good as the next. I had to come to the realization that God did not make me like everyone else. With lots of prayers and a great support system, I’ve come a long way in the confidence department.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known as a Freelance MUA, or more so a Self Taught MUA. I specialize in Soft Glam makeup. I am most proud of how far I’ve come in the beauty industry.

I’m proud of how there were so many times I could have given up because it was not going the way I would have liked, but I kept going!! God did that!!! What sets me apart from others, would have to be my perseverance. With all the struggles, and there have been many, lol, I’m still here doing what I love.

How do you define success?
My definition of success would be whatever it is you’re doing, or are interested in doing, do it for you, and not the validation of others. Success is believing you can, even if everyone says you can’t!!
