Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Sokel.
Hi Jordan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Pressing Strings has been releasing music for over a decade as well as touring the northeast and beyond. We have played thousands of shows from backyards to small clubs to opening for bands like Gov’t Mule, JJ Grey, Toad the Wet Sprocket, etc, and Festivals like Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, etc.
The band’s music is a mix of folk, blues, soul, rock, and reggae.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve had to work really hard for a really long time just to see any sort of daylight in the music industry. We’ve played every kind of gig you can think of over the years and it’s one of those things where you are either a “lifer” or you are not.
It is notoriously competitive and with the entire touring industry taking a two-year pause and then jolting back into motion again there have been a lot of challenges. But with that all being said, it’s also one of the most fun and personally rewarding ways to spend your time and effort on. You have the power to help people cope with their own struggles and that makes it all worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What I am most proud of is that in our experience, no matter who the audience is—gender/ethnicity/economic class/musical taste, etc. I’ve seen us be able to appeal to everyone with the level of quality in our music.
The lyrics I write are sincere and I think it is obvious to anyone that we put an exorbitant amount of care into learning about all types of music and try to apply that knowledge into our own art. I truly think that there is something to it that everyone in the world could identify with and appreciate if it was presented to them in the right manner.
What does success mean to you?
Being comfortable and happy with your decisions in life. Exercising your sense of humor as much as possible. Being able to maintain and appreciate your closest relationships and being economically stable enough to enjoy the passing of time.
