Community Highlights: Meet LaToya Cooper of Asanas & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Cooper.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
My first experience with yoga was in the early 90s. It wasn’t a practice that I took very seriously at the time. But years later, divine alignment led me back to the practice after finding myself depleted and unhappy. After experiencing inner healing and transformation, I decided to take yoga teacher training to deepen my knowledge of yoga. I had no intention of teaching. I just wanted to understand how yoga worked. As I progressed through the training, I began thinking, “I have to share this!” I knew that there were other people who looked like me and who had similar life experiences as me, who had no idea how yoga could give them a renewed energy. In 2020 I started Asanas & Wellness to share my ongoing journey and guide others to find their inner peace and balance through yoga & holistic wellness. I am now a 500hr registered yoga teacher, a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider, and a certified mindfulness & meditation teacher. I primarily teach Yin Yoga, gentle Hatha, and Qigong.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my biggest struggles was having the courage to step outside of my comfort zone. I’m an introvert, and I get nervous when talking to people I don’t know. On top of that, I started Asanas & Wellness at the beginning of Covid, so I was mostly virtual, which is 10x worst for me. I resisted going virtual for a while because I thought Covid would be over by the summer of that year. When it didn’t go away, I had to find the courage to get comfortable with being uncomfortable in order to manifest my dreams for my wellness brand.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Asanas & Wellness is a company that creates yoga and holistic wellness content to help people find inner peace and balance. I specialize in Yin Yoga, gentle Hatha, Qigong, and meditation. The classes I teach are beginner friendly and for all body types. I offer several pose variations and encourage the use of props to help make yoga safe and accessible for many. I also provide several class lengths for pre-recorded content, from 10 minutes to one hour, so that everyone can find a class length that works for their schedule. In addition to creating content for Asanas and Wellness, I also create classes, tutorials, and workshops for a yoga school and teach corporate wellness workshops.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very quiet, as I am today. But I was always interested in fitness. During the summer, I’d wake up and turn on my tv to work out with Denise Austin and Body By Jake. Taking care of myself was always important.
