Hidden Gems: Meet Quana Jackson of PTforHer Pelvic Health & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Quana Tribble Jackson, also known as Dr. Q.

Hi Dr. Q, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a native of Charlotte, NC, but also spent a part of my childhood years in the DMV area. Growing up, my parents always instilled in my siblings and I the importance of  going after our dreams and accomplishing whatever we set our mind on. That mindset is exactly what led me to becoming a first generation college graduate, as well as opening my own private practice years later. My passion for helping others started when I was a little girl, so it was no surprise that I would major in the healthcare field in college. I received my Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Howard University in 2008, and my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Emory University in 2011. My interest in Women’s Health grew shortly after I graduated from PT school. On my off days, I would shadow a pelvic floor PT to increase my knowledge in pelvic floor therapy. Unfortunately around that time, I endured some of life’s obstacles and had to pause my interest until 2019 when I began my post-doctoral training in pelvic health and obstetrics. It wasn’t until I birthed my second child in 2020 and needed pelvic floor physical therapy that I realized the importance of opening my own practice. With the increase in maternal mortality rates amongst Black women, it was important to me throughout my entire perinatal period that my birthing team not only looked like me, but also had the health of myself and my baby as their top priority even well into the postpartum period. When it came time to look for a pelvic floor PT, I was unable to find a Black clinician in the Charlotte area. With this being an intimate and personal healing process, I would have felt more connected to someone who shared a similar background as myself. The lack of representation in this field fueled my passion to open PTforHER Pelvic Health & Wellness in March of 2021 in Downtown Charlotte.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know if running a business and smooth road should be used in the same sentence, lol! I started from scratch…with nothing, not even a steady referral source to make sure my business saw consistent growth. It didn’t matter though, I knew consistency and hard work would get me results, I just couldn’t give up! In PT school, I got Philippians 4:13 tattooed on my right wrist to constantly remind myself that I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me! This tattoo has come in handy when my days are long and filled with challenging obstacles. Throughout the madness, I’ve learned to find joy even in the tough times. We don’t fail, we learn lessons and grow from there!
