Rising Stars: Meet Katie Riordan of Wake Forest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Riordan.

Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always done crafts and have been creative for as long as I can remember. I made my first pair of earrings when I was 8 for my 2nd-grade economics project and have continued to make them ever since. After being sent home from college because of the pandemic, I started to get more creative with all my free time. I started making earrings and getting more creative. I also began painting portraits. I started Ladybug Designs Co to share what I make with others.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had some anxiety throughout my life. Having a creative outlet has helped my anxiety in different ways.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to make anything and everything. I make earrings, personalized paintings, and ornaments; I am most proud of my paintings. I spend a lot of time on them and like to try different things; I’ve done people, houses, and pets. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid to try to make new things. For example, I had a friend reach out and ask if I could make ornaments of her in her wedding dress for her family, and I made one for my cousin to try to see how I could do it before I made hers.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The person who deserves all the credit is both of my parents. My mom loves to sew and teach me, and my dad loves to do woodwork. They both have helped me be creative and encouraged me to be creative. They have supported me in everything I do; teaching, coaching and doing my own small business. They also bought me craft supplies or took me on endless trips to what has been called my favorite store, Micheal’s.
