Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Johnson Thompson.
Hi Kathryn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The idea of QueDogs formed years ago when our dad, Harold, and I discussed a business serving hotdogs and BBQ. At the time, we did not know how to start nor did we have the financial means to do so. However, my dad knew he wanted the name to be QueDogs. Our ” Que ” is a family recipe our maternal Great-Aunt passed down to our dad. He was the only one that she gave the recipe. My dad’s chili recipe for our “Dogs” is something special, but my touch added “umph” to it. Our vision and love for family, food, and fun has allowed us to share our rich history of good, soulful food with our community.
Fast forward to 2020, amid the Covid-19 Pandemic, I had an idea and called my brother, Patrick, who serves as CEO of the company. I informed Patrick of the conversation that our dad and I had years ago regarding our vision for QueDogs and asked if he wanted to join me in starting the business. Patrick knew that I would start the business alone if needed, but he agreed to help. We officially began QueDogs in June 2020. At our first Pop-Up held in Durham, NC, at MoodSwing Studio, Mr. Andre, a family friend, told Patrick and me that we have the recipe for success, and we genuinely believe we do. After our first Pop-Up, we hit the ground running, and received a lot of interest from local breweries to be their food vendor. Before we knew it, we became a household name. We made the Top 16 Hotdogs in the News and Observer our first year in business. As long as we stay humble and inspired, QueDogs will continue to prosper.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Fortunately, we have not faced many challenges, but what has been somewhat challenging is finding a Second Generation restaurant to call our home. We would love to find a small, take-out spot in the Triangle. If you have any leads, email us :).
We’ve been impressed with QueDogs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We have the Best Que and Dogs around. Guaranteed!
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
In business, you have to talk to successful business owners. Find out what worked and did not work for them. Talk about the negatives and positives that helped them become who they are. Discuss hardships and things they would do differently. Incorporate partnerships with like-minded people in the community. Explore opportunities such as grants and other financial resources. All of the things above are critical attributes to having a successful business. Big C, the owner of Big C Waffles, who has acted as our mentor along the way, has certainly been influential.
