Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to successfully launching Julie’s Grills To Go has required a team effort; most grills weigh over three hundred pounds. With some persuasion, I recruited the partnership of my son, Ben, to fill the critical role of grill delivery and pick-up. Later, as the volume of weekend rentals grew, Ben’s fiancé joined in to support business efforts. Along the way, we faced the challenge of introducing the concept of renting grills and smokers. Many of our customers have grills and smokers already but find that they need larger sizes when entertaining larger crowds or don’t have access to their equipment where it is required. Most people do not realize that such a service exists, so it is up to us to explain why renting a grill or smoker makes a lot of sense in terms of affordability, convenience, and time savings. Our reward has been the overwhelming satisfaction of those who have used our service and have given us repeat business because they can appreciate the value of a hassle-free grilling experience.

Starting a business of my own has been a dream come true for me and is an excellent complement to an already successful career. Do you have any advice for those just starting?
The advice I would pass along to someone wanting to start a business on their own is immediately starting selling your product or service before you have the perfect branding materials, website, sales pitch, etc. In the first few years, you will have so many opportunities to share your offerings based on the input of your customers that materials that seemed to be a perfect fit at the time soon become obsolete. Use the freedom and autonomy associated with having a business of your own to shape and expand on the things that can differentiate you from your competitors.
