Hidden Gems: Meet Tyler Kerby of High Class Automotive Detailing, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Kerby.

Hi Tyler, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
As a child, I knew I would always work for myself. I took multiple small, part-time jobs after school and sports. When I was 18, I got a job as a detailer in a foreign car dealership and fell in love with it. My friend’s father contacted me, asking if I could detail his car since he knew I had already done it, and of course, I said yes! I took $50 and went to the local automotive store to get as much as possible with the little money I had. I charged him for full detail, and it took me 3 hours. That day, May 13, 2021, I opened my business—High Class Automotive Detailing, LLC. I was super optimistic, but business is tough. It was so slow at one point that I had 17 cents in my bank because I was reinvesting all my money into the business to grow it. I finished my first year with 24 details. As January 2022 approached, the business was not producing enough money to pay my bills. So, I got a full-time job at my local KFC to bring in extra money for my bills and invest my paychecks into my business to help grow it. As I continued to network and meet people, my business slowly grew. I picked up multiple monthly clients, bought my first business van, and slowly started getting more and more jobs. I was getting busier! I started detailing in the mornings, from 7 am to 4 pm. I’d go home, shower, eat, and go to KFC every day from 5 pm to 11 pm. Finally, I was getting so busy that I quit my job in June of that year. It was a great feeling to be able to work for myself full-time at 19 years old. I kept my head down to work. I started getting multiple high-end clients with high-end cars. That same year I opened my first location, a huge step in my business. I finished 2022 with detailing over 275 vehicles! Crazy considering the year before, I detailed 24. Things can change quickly when you’re consistently working and learning to better yourself and your business. My best advice is to hang around and surround yourself with like-minded people who want to be successful in life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Yes, it is a relatively smooth road. Some of the main struggles we faced initially were getting clients, getting the name out there, and needing more capital. I wanted to grow organically, by word of mouth, and with a stellar reputation. So, to get my name out there, I networked with many other entrepreneurs and mentors, who gave me advice and introduced me to other successful people. I worked hard to put every dime I made back into my business, slowly growing capital over time and with jobs and experience.
