Meet Sonalys Alexandra Matos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonalys Alexandra Matos.

Hi Sonalys Alexandra; we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Sonalys Matos, when I was in high school, I gave myself a nickname, and everyone started calling me Sammy. I am Dominican, born and raised, and come from a family that complements and fulfills me. I’ve always loved making others feel good, so I started my makeup journey by doing makeup for my friends as a teenager. Then I graduated from high school and decided to study makeup professionally. I participated in a scholarship at the best makeup school in my country, to which I will always be grateful and love all those who taught me much of what I know today, especially my teacher, who was the key and creator of this dream. I graduated and did some extra courses when my mom, sister, and I immigrated to the United States. It was a big change, but my dream was strong even though it was difficult when I started because I didn’t know much English (I’m still working on it, but I’ve improved). I didn’t have a car either, and I walked with all my necessary equipment to do makeup in the cold. When I lived in New Jersey, many people supported me, told me not to stop, and felt happy with my work. I spent years working in New Jersey, I used to help in a hair salon where they supported me a lot, and I promoted my work there. It has been a long road with many tests, but it has been worth it. I am achieving all of my dreams. When the pandemic started, it impacted all of us, and then my business went down, it was a long month, and I took a break from makeup. Amid this, I decided to move to Raleigh, NC, and I went through a very traumatic situation that stopped everything in my professional and personal life. However, I am back after having healed and seeking the necessary help.

I returned to doing everything that filled my soul and chasing my dreams. People have supported me since the first day I picked up a makeup brush here. Thanks to my dedication and desire to continue, today I am currently studying to graduate in cosmetology, and I continue training day by day to give you more of me. I am certified as a lash technician, I have knocked on doors, and they have all opened in my favor; today, I work as a freelance with an amazing team of women at Reign Beauty in Raleigh. Also, I recently got my private suite in Cary, NC. I offer my eyelash extensions services, makeup, self-makeup classes, and other services that I will incorporate later because my goal is to continue, and I have much to give. Today I am 5 years old as a makeup artist, I have had a long journey, but today, I am receiving the reward: to live from what I love.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been challenging since I moved to the United States. It has been a big change because it’s a new country and new people. Sometimes people don’t trust your work and dreams, but no matter all the atrocities, I kept working and believing in myself to achieve all my goals. I’ve bet a lot and lost a lot, too, but I’m getting the pay for my hard work, which is the most important thing. Looking back on all my mistakes and where I am today motivates me to keep going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been a certified makeup artist since 5 years ago. I have worked on films, photoshoots, and weddings. Right now, I’m working mostly with weddings. I’m also a certified lash technician and have a private studio in Cary, NC. I believe each person is different and special, but what sets me apart from others is the connection I feel with all my clients and the people I work with when I help them with my work.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like the most about Raleigh is working with a more calm public than the one I’m used to, working in outdoor weddings, and appreciating the environment in this city. What I like least about this city is the poor control over laws against domestic violence and female oppressors.
