Meet Shelby Elizabeth of Fayetteville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Elizabeth.

Hi Shelby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hi! I’m Shelby, and I’m a freelance graphic designer based out here in Fayetteville. I moved to North Carolina in 2019 from a small city in Pennsylvania. I moved here on my 21st birthday with no job and no money. When I first moved here, I became a business partner at a small smoothie bar in Buies Creek. I eventually expanded out here to Fayetteville to open one. I found my apartment on Craigslist, packed all my belongings, and booked it down south. Covid messed with those plans, but I kept on trucking along and working any job I could get my hands on. That involves a nonprofit called Revolutionary Coworking, Valor Massage, and Fayetteville Mustangs! I also work with a nonprofit called the Marius Maximus Foundation for Mental Health.

I love to work and stay busy. I don’t know how to stop or slow down! My work ethic is one of the things I take pride in. I spend it snuggling with my two cats and reading a good book in my free time. Now, I am a freelance graphic designer. I’ve been doing art and design for over 10 years, specializing in business branding, web design, and social media marketing! I started graphic design when I was 15. I went to a trade school after my high school classes and graduated three years later. All the Adobe suites taught me to brand, photograph, and the fine arts. I realized then my passion was business. I love working with businesses and adding “a little spice ” to their branding and marketing!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It has been a challenging road! A week into moving down here in the south, I got hit with appendicitis and had to take two weeks off from work a house I bought flooded and destroyed nearly everything in the house. Thankfully it’s fixed now, and I’ve moved on from there. I opened a smoothie bar in the middle of covid, went to expand, and then it all went down the drain. So I went into serving, waited tables during the day, and cried in my car at night. I have fought my depression and anxiety, trying to climb back from rock bottom.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
As a freelance graphic designer, I specialize in logos, websites, and branding packages. I go by “Shelby Liz Designs” for my freelancing. I’m most proud of my branding for a Mac and Cheese Throwdown in Fayetteville. It’s so much fun to develop the web page, the logo, and the flyers that get passed around! What sets me apart from others is I make everything custom. I don’t follow templates. I don’t give off corporate vibes. If you are looking for something uniquely you, I’m the one you want to talk to. I like to make things fun, and I like to stretch my limits and see how I can make something stand out in a crowd.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years, I plan to be the number one designer in Fayetteville. I want enough work to have a whole team of people with me to create new and individual designs. Art is everywhere. Literally. Every logo, every website, every sign or billboard you see, someone makes those. It’s always going to continue, and with technology growing at such a rapid pace, it’s going to continue.
