Today we’d like to introduce you to Kistina Boyd.
Hi Kistina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Smarty Pants Tutoring Services LLC was created almost 11 years ago. I was always the one who friends and family would call or text when they had trouble completing homework questions. I was a great student in both school and in college, and I guess others felt comfortable asking me for help. After a while, I decided I could make money off of this skill. After procrastinating for a while about getting started, one day at work, I decided to just go for it. I thought of the name, created some business cards, picked them up on my lunch break, and the rest – as they say – is history!
Smarty Pants Tutoring has tutored hundreds of students, hosted numerous kidshops where I’ve taught little ones to tie their shoes and write in cursive. I have also hosted #smartywars which is a fun old-school field day in the park. My goal is to continue to be a positive influence to children for many years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not always been smooth. Starting out, I was a one-woman show. I did absolutely everything myself. As time went on, I was established enough to hire a staff to assist with students and the business. Things were going really well prior to March 2020. I had two tutoring centers, and our schedule was full; life was great! Once the pandemic hit us, I was forced to transition to virtual tutoring. My student base dropped significantly, and I then found myself doing it all myself again.
Currently, business has been up and down. The most busiest times are report card season and during the summer. Realizing that I can reach more students using a virtual platform, I have decided for now; Smarty Pants will stay online. I do, however, intend to open up a physical location again in the foreseeable future.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional private tutor. I specialize in all subject areas, but most of my students struggle in math and reading. I work with both school-age students and adult learners. I specialize in building confidence in students and helping them reach their academic goals. My students range from locally here in NC to across the states. Utilizing a virtual platform has allowed me to extend my reach and impact students a physical location could not.
I am originally from Ohio, and I am most proud of my 100% pass rate. For many years, I felt like I was considered the “go-to tutor” for students needing to pass the Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee exam. All of my “smarty pants” who attended consistent tutoring passed their tests and advanced to 4th grade. I love assisting all students of all levels, but I think deep down, this accomplishment will forever hold a huge place in my heart. I am proud of the work that they put in, and I am most proud of the trust parents and caregivers had in my services to warrant them positive results.
Smarty Pants Tutoring offers virtual tutoring and test preparation in most subjects. Specializing in reading, math, ACT, SAT, and GED prep, my goal is to give students the fundamental skills and confidence needed to become their best academic self. Session costs start as low as $25. I even offer a discounted rate when parents subscribe to monthly tutoring.

When I moved to the Charlotte area a few years ago, I decided to take my talents into the classroom. Working for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School district, I continue to nurture my passion of helping students become the best they can be while building confidence and closing learning gaps.
