Conversations with Christy Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Johnson.

Hi Christy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
After the birth of my first child, my husband gifted me a DSLR camera. I toyed with it a bit at first but was quickly overwhelmed by its many features. I set the camera aside for months, not sure where to even begin. Then I ran across a photography forum online, and the seed that had been planted started to grow into an obsession. I took thousands of photographs, soaking in everything I was learning online, practicing my craft on my first baby and eventually my second. Soon enough, friends and family were asking me to photograph their children as well. Before long, my fun little obsession grew from a hobby to a side job in 2009 and then to my full-time job in 2010.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Any entrepreneur can tell you that running a small business is never a smooth road. I’ve run into issues with burnout twice, with the last bout affecting my health. I needed to slow down and take better care of myself, as well as rediscover my love for my business and my art. The pandemic gave me an excuse to close my photography studio and take some time to heal. And just when I was ready to launch again, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I’m in remission now, thankfully, and back to work full time photographing the cutest babies in the Triangle!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For 14 years, I’ve specialized in organic fine art photography for maternity, newborn, baby and family. My clients call me “the baby whisperer” for my ease and rapport with babies and young children. I help busy new moms capture all of the important milestones of baby’s first year – it goes so fast! I love designing wall galleries of framed art pieces for my clients, as well as crafting heirloom albums that their families can enjoy for years.

What matters most to you? Why?
Family matters most to me. My journey with leukemia could have gone a whole other direction, and all my family would have left are photos and videos of me – and it would never be enough for them. I’ve vowed to show up on the other side of the camera more often – with them and for them. That’s why it’s so important to me that the family historian – most often, mom – is captured forever in time, loving on her children in her own way.
