Life & Work with Titania Hunter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Titania Hunter. 

Hi Titania, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Creating art has always been a part of my life. Considering that I started at a young age, in elementary school. My first drawing was a self-portrait using color pencils. Now, I have a huge passion for creating traditional and digital paintings. My first experience as an artist was when I received a 2017 Congressional Art Certificate in High School, signed by a U.S. Representative, Richard Hudson. After I graduated from Concord High School in 2018, I then received an AFA in 2020 from Central Piedmont Community College. Later, I went on to study at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where I am currently earning my BFA in Painting. I should graduate sometime in the fall of 2023. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is not always easy and smooth sailing. I think that we can all admit to that. I have experienced obstacles and moments that stopped me from creating art. However, from these obstacles, I have grown and gotten stronger spiritually, mentally, and physically. My advice for everyone is always to do what makes you happy, what you have a passion for. What you are CALLED and LED to do. I feel like I once was a caterpillar, and now I am a butterfly. I spread my wings to fly. I know that this is only the beginning for me, and I am proud of who I became and the work that I have done so far. I believe more opportunities are coming, and doors are opening. 

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work brings positivity to light, shows emotion and human expression, and discusses my Christian faith in a visual form. My passion is to create original traditional & digital paintings that will tell stories, uplift and encourage people. I am a firm believer in God, and I plan to continue using all the gifts He has given me. I create because I want to continue spreading positivity as well as showing the true love of Christ and how much He means to me. I use bold, vibrant colors to express the mood and feeling within my work. During my creative processes, for some paintings, I plan and gather inspiration. Other paintings are done prophetically. Prophetic art is about showing a message from God through visual imagery. It can be done through paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture. I want to show viewers that all of my work has a spiritual/biblical connection. You will often see that there is a bible verse made for each painting. 

It took some time to figure out what I wanted to specialize in. Considering that there were so many areas in the art to choose from. I started doing colored pencil drawings, then switched to black & white drawings. It can be overwhelming at times when you are first figuring out what you want to do. During my junior year at UNC Charlotte, I realized that painting is what I wanted to do more. It gives me so much joy, happiness, and peace. Peace knowing that I can put down my emotions and feelings onto the canvas. I have been selling my work locally in North Carolina, but then I decided to put my work online. On March 23, 2023, I began my online art business. I put my paintings & designs into good-quality products. By the grace of God, I have been making sales. 

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
“What matters to God matters to me!: Honesty & Obedience,” which is the title of a children’s book by Dr. Leslie Griffin. I always say, “If the Lord is pointing me in a specific direction, then I should go in that same direction.” He has been guiding me and directing my paths. Another thing that matters to me is the love and support that I receive from my family and friends. I am so thankful for every single one of them.
