Exploring Life & Business with Charmaine Benjamin of Mama Me Time Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charmaine Benjamin.

Hi Charmaine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After having an unplanned emergency cesarean back in 2017 that could have taken my life, I dived deep into the Birth work industry as a Birth Doula. As I became an advocate and resource for moms, I also began to incorporate massage & bodywork therapy in my approach to helping my clients achieve better birthing outcomes. Quickly after the birth of my daughter in 2021, I stopped putting my vision on hold, and I formed Mama Me Time, LLC. in response to my work as a birth & bodyworker. It became my mission to serve other mothers (soon-to-be, new and experienced). June 3, 2023, marks two years since we opened our doors, and we continue to thrive, supporting nearly 100 families with our birth services, including Childbirth Education, Labor Support classes, Birth Doula services, and lactation counseling, not to mention serving over 200 massage clients over the course of two years with real results and relief.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
“Nothing really worth having comes quickly and easily. If it did, I doubt that we would ever grow.” – Eknath Easwaran

All I can say is, just like wine, we get better with time. The road has not been smooth, but we have learned with every bump in the road and detour. Over the course of these two years, we may have rebranded three times, relocated twice, and struggled with finding our true niche in the very beginning. With social media on the rise for marketing, I struggled with the idea of traditional marketing no longer being the go-to road to travel. In addition, I have always believed that the biggest compliment and/or non-monetary tip a client could provide is a referral. Referrals can happen via word of mouth, but the biggest referrals come from publicly written reviews. I say all this to say the referrals and reviews began rolling in after we niched down and began serving our ideal clients whom value our work and the premium services we provide.

As you know, we’re big fans of Mama Me Time Spa. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Here at Mama Me Time Spa, we provide clinical massage and bodywork services with a customized spa experience for our guests and members. We specialize in pregnancy/postpartum massage, Swedish/therapeutic, deep tissue, myofascial release, and assisted stretching. Some of the enhancements we offer include heated body scrubs, dry brushing, hot stones, and cupping, just to name a few. Our most requested service is the Expecting Mama (75min) – our famous prenatal massage experience for expecting mothers. Pregnancy massage has so many great benefits for mom including reduce swelling, improve circulation, and eliminating pain and discomfort. We pride ourselves in customizing each session based on the needs of our clients and following up with a treatment plan to continue providing results and relief.

What were you like growing up?
One word: BOSS.

Growing up, I have always had the boss mentality. I asked my mom if I could open my very first banking account at the age of 10 because I wanted to save for my future. I have always had the organizational skills with the ability to lead. As a child, my aspirations changed frequently. Some days I wanted to be a Judge or Lawyer; other days, I wanted to be a Fashion Designer, but one thing is for sure when there needed to be a group lead, I was always the first to raise my hand and volunteer my expertise. In college, I struggled with the idea of retiring from Corporate America, so I decided to major in Business Administration & Marketing to ensure I had the foundation of one day becoming the boss. I am where I am today due to hard work and perseverance, but also because, just as I was at the age of ten, I still manage my money pretty well.
