Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktoria Majestic.
Hi Viktoria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a small town in Hungary. Ever since I was little, I was drawn to nature, loved color, drawing, painting, and everything art related. Where I grew up, I found a well-known local artist who helped me to further develop my painting skills. Nevertheless, I convinced myself that I could never make a living as an artist, and I stopped pursuing painting all together, for a few years. I decided to come to the United States, to learn English. Ater several odd jobs, and many struggles, I met my current husband. It was almost 23 years ago, when we got married, and raised our three children together. A few years later, I enrolled in college, and majored in business. By the time I graduated, I missed painting so much, I decided to start my own mural and decorative painting business. It was very scary at first, because I knew nothing about mural painting, and it was a physically demanding hard work, but I felt that I had to try it. It became a successful business. However, after several years in business, I ended up with an incapacitating back problem, which forced me to stop and change course. At this point, I knew that I had to find a way to continue painting. That was the time, when I found the Ridgewood Art Institute, and the Art Students League of New York, where I received my classical training in oil painting. I had to make a living while studying art, so I started to teach painting classes. Several years later, my husband and I moved to North Carolina. My husband started an organic vegetable farm, and I continued teaching at local art schools and at my studio. It’s been 8 years since we’ve moved here. I built up a following of students, and started my own art school, named: Yadkin River School. I also started to sell my work through local galleries and shows.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth journey. Starting with arriving in a country where I knew nothing and no one, with no money. It took many years of struggle, and very hard work to get to where I am today.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time professional fine artist and art instructor. I specialize in traditional oil painting. I am mostly known for my floral and bird paintings, but I also enjoy painting custom pet portraits and other subjects. I also love teaching and sharing the ins and outs of oil painting, while seeing my students blossom.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
It might be surprising that after high school, instead of pursuing painting as a career, I started a cake-decorating business. I baked and decorated many wedding and birthday cakes. Now it seems like it was a lifetime ago, and I am grateful that I found my way back to painting.
