Meet Christopher Weedon, a Charlotte resident who has dedicated his life to promoting fitness, well-being, and mental health advocacy. After retiring from a successful sports career in 2015, Weedon embarked on a new journey in corporate America in 2016, filled with purpose and determination. However, his path took an unexpected turn with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, we will delve into Weedon’s personal story of resilience, exploring the challenges he faced and the steps he took to reclaim his mental health.
What Happened:
As 2020 unfolded, Weedon’s life seemed to be on an upward trajectory. He had recently launched a podcast and started a new job, bringing excitement and new possibilities to his days. However, everything changed when COVID-19 struck. Weedon contracted the virus in November, leading to a physically grueling battle characterized by fatigue, breathing difficulties, and other symptoms. While he eventually recovered physically, the mental toll of the experience left Weedon grappling with anxiety and depression. Isolation and withdrawal became his coping mechanisms, exacerbating his struggles.
In addition to the challenges posed by COVID-19, the tragic events surrounding the Ahmaud Arbery case further intensified Weedon’s anxiety, causing him to withdraw even further from society. He no longer felt safe walking around the vibrant community of Charlotte or working out outside as fear gripped him, acknowledging that this kind of injustice could happen to him. The combination of the pandemic and racial tensions took a heavy toll on his mental well-being, deepening his sense of isolation and distress.
Furthermore, financial restraints added an additional burden on Weedon’s mental health. As Mentally Shredded was self-funded, the financial challenges weighed heavily on him. However, despite these constraints, Weedon remained steadfast in his belief in the work they were doing. He had a strong conviction that Mentally Shredded had the potential to become a global brand, attracting the right partners and funders who shared his vision. Weedon’s determination and faith in the future sustains him during this challenging period.
Seeking an escape, Weedon embarked on a vacation to Maui in June 2021, hoping that the change of scenery would alleviate his anxiety. Although he enjoyed the trip, upon returning home, he was confronted with a panic attack that served as a stark reminder of the challenges he still faced. Motivated by this wake-up call, he made the courageous decision to leave his job, recognizing the need to prioritize his mental health.

Weedon’s turning point came when he realized he needed professional help to navigate his mental health challenges effectively. Although his first therapist wasn’t the right fit, he persevered and eventually found a therapist he connected with. Through therapy, Weedon learned to employ a variety of tools and strategies to manage his anxiety. In 2022, he focused on rebuilding his mental, physical, and spiritual health. This involved establishing daily routines that included writing affirmations and practicing gratitude, exploring new experiences outside his comfort zone, maintaining his gym routine, prioritizing nutrition, practicing meditation and prayer, and ensuring sufficient sleep.

Yes, it has been far from a smooth road for me. I’ve encountered numerous struggles throughout my journey to reclaim my mental health and advocate for others. These challenges tested my resilience and pushed me to my limits. Here are some of the significant struggles I’ve faced:
- Mental Health Battles: After contracting COVID-19, I experienced severe anxiety and depression. The physical symptoms were difficult enough, but the toll it took on my mental well-being was overwhelming. I battled through long days of extreme fatigue, difficulty breathing, and stomach issues. The mental recovery was just as challenging, as I struggled with anxiety and depression, often feeling like I was trapped in a dark hole.
- Isolation and Withdrawal: My anxiety and depression led me to isolate myself and distance myself from loved ones. I believed that shutting myself off from the world would somehow protect me, but in reality, it only worsened my condition. The loneliness and lack of social connections further deepened my struggles, making it difficult to find the support I desperately needed.
- Fear and Safety Concerns: The tragic events surrounding the Ahmaud Arbery case shattered my sense of safety and security. I no longer felt comfortable walking around my vibrant community or working out outside due to the constant fear that I, too, could become a victim of racial injustice. This fear weighed heavily on my mind and contributed to my anxiety and isolation.
- Financial Restraints: As Mentally Shredded is self-funded, I’ve faced significant financial restraints. This has added an enormous burden on my mental health, as I constantly worry about the financial sustainability of the business. However, I firmly believe in the work we are doing and the impact we are making, which motivates me to push through the financial challenges. I know we will attract the right partners, sponsors, and funding.
Despite these struggles, I refuse to let them define me or hold me back. I sought professional help, engaged in therapy, and discovered effective coping mechanisms. By combining physical exercise with mindfulness practices and mental resilience techniques, we can promote a holistic approach to well-being. Through workshops, training sessions, and events, I empower gym-goers to not only strengthen their bodies but also nurture their mental and emotional strength.
Working with businesses provides an opportunity to bring mental health awareness and support directly into the workplace. I offer workshops and training programs that focus on stress management, resilience building, and fostering a positive work environment. These collaborations aim to create spaces where employees feel supported and encouraged to prioritize their mental health, leading to increased productivity, satisfaction, and overall well-being.
Collaborations with sports teams allow me to address the unique mental health challenges faced by athletes. Together, we develop programs and resources that emphasize mental resilience, performance mindset, and maintaining a healthy balance between sports and mental well-being. By supporting athletes’ mental health, we can help them achieve their full potential both on and off the field.

By working together, we can reduce mental health stigma and provide accessible resources for support, ensuring that mental health is prioritized and addressed in a comprehensive and inclusive manner.

During the Covid-19 crisis, I have learned some interesting and important lessons that have shaped my perspective on life:
Resilience and Adaptability: The pandemic forced us all to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. It highlighted the importance of resilience and the ability to pivot in the face of challenges. I learned that even in the midst of a government shutdown or a global pandemic, it is possible to find new opportunities and navigate through uncertainty.

I learned that even when physically separated, we can still foster meaningful connections and support each other through technology and creative means.
