Today we’d like to introduce you to Quintin Tate.
Hi Quintin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I become influenced by design at an early age, roughly around 4 or 5. At that age, it was all about being creative without the understanding of how in-depth the word “design” was. I do not believe the was ever a dull moment when you did not see little Quintin Tate NOT somewhere drawing {laughs}
I entered many different art competitions as I grew into my teenage years that help build the naturally given confidence that I got honestly from my father. However, fast-forwarding… I’ve always expressed my liking for architecture, so it {my father] took it upon himself to then all me to assist him with flipping some properties he bought. This was circa 2004, maybe 2005. The desire to learn more about the infrastructure of a space grew more and more.
Once I was old enough to move away, I began my “Adulting” journey. [laughing] I decided to go off to college and learn more about the field. Now granted, I have again also had a passion and love for the arts and being a creative; therefore, I found a loop on how to merge it with architecture… and the field of Interior Design was presented. I completed my Bachelor of Fine Art in Interior Design at the top of my class, winning a gold medal for Best In Show Graduate in the Spring of 2017. That same year, I developed my own business, Twenty Sevyn Interiors, where I specialize in the beautification and renovation of residential, commercial, and hospitality design projects.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a business owner is not an easy task, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying! [laughing] This journey has been filled with a lot of trials and errors, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I personally pride myself for continuing to push through it all.
The biggest struggle that I have dealt with in the past is being a black male interior designer. Yea, I know many would say that sounds somewhat cliché, but it’s so true. This is a white female-dominated industry already, so when a male comes through, it’s like, “ooooh…” But when I black male is presented, it’s very much “ooooh he’s not on our level” or “We are better than him/them.” Luckily, I was told this would be something to look out for by one of my college professors. She told me, “Sadly that being black, you automatically have to work 10x harder to prove yourself in this industry.” Let’s just say she wasn’t lying. Well, at least it felt that way most of the time.
Now here in 2023, I really could careless. My talent, my professionalism, my desire, and my existence means so much more than the private thoughts of a stranger.
As you know, we’re big fans of Twenty Sevyn Interiors. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Twenty Sevyn Interiors earned its name based upon the age I had the desire to hit the ground running in this industry. I began developing polished spaces from the male experience that are functional and appealing to the eye through quality, textiles, fixtures, and furnishings for residential, commercial, and future hospitality projects.
Our design style is a modern aesthetic, on the foundation of a monochromatic base with a flare of color to incorporate feminine energy from a males perspective. Is that a tongue tie? [laughing] yea! But it makes a lot of sense when you see our presented moodboards and finished projects.
Our (TSI) ultimate mission is to transform lifestyles and businesses through the renovation and beautification of projects. Currently, Twenty Sevyn Interiors primarily services projects in Washington, D.C. (DMV Area) and North Carolina. However, accepts “homies” [as I like to call my clients] from anywhere.
We work within budgets but are also very transparent with what a reasonable budget is for desired projects. The biggest misconception of this business is expenses. Yes, you can hire anyone to help with your decor or design needs, but when you hire an interior designer like myself here at Twenty Sevyn Interiors, you’re now getting a luxury service. We wear many hats in this field and are usually up before the birds and/or up while they are getting their beauty rest. We develop the plans, research, coordinate, and manage the projects. Sometimes multiples at the same time. We focus on space planning all the while creating cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design ideas for homes and businesses.
It’s so rewarding to see the finished product and know that you helped make someone’s dream a reality. That’s literally the best part of this field.
Also, we have our very own Luxury Home Scent Collection, called The Signature Collection. Each scent was personally curated by me, so that all of our clients or supports can feel just as luxury as they desire within their spaces. Definitely head on over to our website for that.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
OMG, I have so many… there is no way I could narrow it down to just one. [laughing] But I will say, my family would be one of my top 3 favorites. Being able to grow up in a society where we got to experience the outdoors. Naturally utilizing communication / social skills to build and grow as a community. I bet you every scar on my legs and arms is attached to a laughable memory from my childhood.
