Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaron Sturdivant-Drakeford.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing music and humming melodies in 2011 -2012. I then was introduced by Decorious Bristel to the recording and creative studio portion of the music. From that day, my career and life changed; I found that passion and love that sparked a flame inside of me creatively. Recording daily throughout all four of my years in high school helped me find my balance and musical lane. After completing high school, I attended North Carolina A&T, where I connected and networked with many producers, engineers, and artist within the city and surrounding cities. After completing my degree at North Carolina, A&T, I relocated to Los Angeles in 2021, where I attended the Los Angeles Film & Recording School and finished with a degree in Audio Engineering & Songwriting. This change and leap of faith have allowed me to work alongside Grammy Nominated Engineers and Producers such as DJ Drama, Devine Evans, and many more great talents in our musical history.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has had its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t ask for the process to happen any other way. I have had the privilege of seeing myself grow and improve in areas where I didn’t feel needed improvement until the improvement was made. Understanding that the groundwork it takes to push and promote a brand or person takes more than just the minimum and simple social media post. Finding my balance between great product(music) and the correct promotion along with global resources has been one of the major struggles I’ve had to face throughout my career.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a songwriter, recording artist along with audio engineer, and I write and produce quality music and melodies for labels as well as independent artist and labels. I specialize in making hit records and catchy rhythms that we sometimes hear on the radio or on our personal playlist. I’ve had the opportunity to write for artist under Atlantic and Empire records while strengthening my connections with A&R and studios. I am most known for making a dope R&B record, the energy, the melody, the lyrics, and the music all coincide with one another and help express my songwriting and creating ability. Being able to understand different contracts and knowing my worth has been a big plus when meeting with labels and corporations and being able to freely release my music, visuals, and artwork. This is something that I’m most proud of. Being creatively free. Being genuine and having great character is what sets me apart from many other artist and creators. Being myself and having a positive attitude towards every situation has placed me in many places that I couldn’t imagine myself being in.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My favorite childhood memory is my mother putting me up on the choir at church for a solo singing and not understanding what something so small led to and drove me to do today now that I’m older. Being so young and having an entire audience’s attention gave me a spark and drive that I developed today. That moment showed me that I could do anything that I wanted to do and never worry about messing up or failing as long as you tried and performed at your best.
