Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Alvarado.

Jose Alvarado

Hi Jose, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I first picked up a machine on July 24 of 2021; I remember it like it was yesterday; I bought a machine off Amazon and started practicing at home on fake skins after coming home from work; I would stay up til 2 a.m. just practicing and try different techniques, my first client was myself, I did some on my own thighs. About 3 months later, I eventually ended up getting an apprenticeship at 4ever tattoo ink studio, where I gladly still work today, and since then it’s been a unique experience and journey being able to do something that pushes you to explore your mind and creativity while also allowing you to gain a new understanding of connecting with people too.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have definitely been moments where you ask yourself if it’s gonna work, but I honestly believe as long as you take the time to study the craft, and the art, put the work in, and dedicate yourself, it’ll be worth it in the end, and it’ll pay off.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a tattoo artist based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. I specialize in black and grey and Traditional Japanese tattoos; I am known for my use of black as well as grey tones; I also prefer to take the time to draw and freehand my own Japanese designs at times. I have been proud of my progress; while still only having 2 years of tattooing, I’m happy to see the dedication and work ethic I’ve put in pay off. I feel what sets me apart is the time to really understand the art of tattooing, to not just see it as a job but a true form of art and lifestyle, the time and effort to admire and appreciate each style and detail and not being afraid to jump out the box.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I definitely see it growing in 5-10 years; tattoos are starting to become more acceptable in a society where I’ve seen clients of 50 years or older come inside for a small tattoo. I also believe it’ll definitely grow commercially as well with certain artists nowadays already doing collaborations with companies such as Nike. I am hoping to one day take part in that industry’s growth, a dream of mine is helping incarcerated inmates get tattoo classes or licenses while inside prison. I have seen countless times the beautiful work someone can do with a guitar string or single needle, and I feel with the right tools, it can be a good steppingstone for those people looking for that change and opportunity in life.
