Today we’d like to introduce you to Amethyst Jones.
Hi Amethyst, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I, like a lot of other small business owners, started my business during the pandemic in 2021. Having so much leisure time, quarantined in the house, and downright bored, I started to look into some hobbies to keep me busy. I love candles so I bought a candle kit, and I actually enjoyed the process and the outcome that came with making candles. After that, I decided to research making candles and starting a candle business. So, I bought more supplies, started making candles in my kitchen, and selling them. I have now went from kitchen candle making to garage candle making thus creating the business Miahna Moon. I hope to continue growing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. There are a ton of details in candlemaking that I did not know. There are so many types of materials to use, and so much testing that you have to do that takes a lot of time before you can even put products out there. Another struggle has been making sales during non-peak times for candles, such as the summer. Another struggle is that people can’t smell candles, online or from pictures, which is the most important component when choosing a candle, and sometimes trying to explain what a candle smells like to someone and trying to make a sell can be a challenge. Yet the love for candle-making keeps me in the game.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my professional, 9-to-5 life, I am a Worker’s Compensation claims adjuster. Which can sometimes be stressful. Making candles helps ease and relieve some of that stress.
I am most proud of my candle business continuing for two years while also working a full-time job, being the mother to three young adults, and also working out every day. It is a lot to manage, but it’s worth the reward.
I think I am known for my great style and taste in fashion, my dedication and discipline to my fitness and nutrition, and most importantly my family. I’m continuing to work on my craft and learning all there is to know about running a successful candle business and being an entrepreneur. There are so many unknowns that can happen out the blue, and we have to know how to overcome them.
Being an entrepreneur is not easy, and quitting sometimes seems easier than figuring it out. Yet if you quit, you are sure to fail.
