Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Musika.
Hi Bradley, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Corolla in the 90’s – when Corolla was truly a gem. I was one of maybe 5 other kids outside of my siblings that lived there year-round. I’ve watched the development of the Outer Banks over the past 30 years, and it’s been both a blessing and a tragedy. About 10 years ago I returned to the Outer Banks after living in Puerto Rico for a few years and started working in the pool industry. I was always a fan of the water and science, so it kind of came natural to me as I began learning about the maintenance and repair processes. After getting my CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification and working for a few different companies, I started to see ways that the industry could improve. I also started to create my own rhythm and way of doing things. I’m a “process” guy – I function better when I have perfected a process for something whether it’s the way I load chemicals & tools in my truck, to the specific order of how I service a property, to the way I tie up my hoses. I started my company right after the pandemic hit. While the Outer Banks was affected by the pandemic, pools still needed cleaning and chemical maintenance regardless of the quantity of renters. Outer Banks is unique because there are year-round residents with private pools, but a large majority of our clients are rental units with pools and spas (hot tubs) that experience extensive use. When they are rented, the homeowners are usually kept in the dark when it comes to knowing if their property has been taken care of properly. That’s where I saw an opportunity to excel in the industry – bringing the use of technology and better communication to the service model. We utilize a customized app technology to help us maintain our clients, routes, repairs, and communications – notifying clients or rental management companies when properties are serviced in real time. It’s part of our mission to provide the best quality service and communication that we can because, as we say in our tagline, “Dirty Water Sucks.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing in Outer Banks is a smooth road. It’s such a beautiful barrier island, but living in Outer Banks year-round comes with its struggles. You have a few months out of the year where you can capitalize on tourism to the greatest capacity (clearly, people aren’t swimming when it’s 45 and blowing from the North in January). After that, you spend the winter either surviving off your summer efforts or trying to continue those efforts through slower economic times. As I started High Seas Pools & Spas, I became a dad for the first time. Learning to balance a start-up, finances, my new parental role, and just trying to enjoy my family and where I live is always difficult. A lot of research went into the different types of apps that could be used to manage this company and our communications, and that came with trials and tribulations. You also face the struggles of finding reliable assets such as work vehicles, employees, and other vendors or partners that can assist with things like electric, concrete, etc. Hard work has never been something I’ve shied away from. Ask anyone on the Outer Banks and they will tell you they can see my truck and my pool pole out and working earlier than most people are even pouring their first coffee.
We’ve been impressed with High Seas Pools & Spas, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
High Seas Pools & Spas is a licensed, insured, and CPO-certified pool and spa business serving the Outer Banks of North Carolina, specializing in maintenance, repairs, and plumbing. We are Outer Banks’ first technology-managed pool company, meaning that we utilize customized app technology to help manage our clients, routes, repairs, and most importantly our communications. We are able to offer real-time updates on service to both clients and rental management companies, which helps reduce questions or problems. We created the #DirtyWaterSucks initiative, focused on providing the highest quality service and communication to keep your pool or spa’s water clean and you informed. We are also a huge supporter of our community, participating in our Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and giving back to a variety of local organizations that help build our unique community. Our Owner, Bradley, grew up in Outer Banks and has had a front-row seat to the growth and development this island has experienced over the last few decades. With an intricate understanding of the landscape and “new and old ways” of the Outer Banks, along with a large network of personal and professional friendships and partnerships, we are able to not only navigate but lead the development. (Maybe even bring back a little bit of that magic everyone loved about our island from decades ago.)
How do you think about luck?
Luck is a funny thing. I think a lot of people focus on situations that seem like good or bad luck, so they settle or make excuses for why things ended up a certain way. I consider myself lucky to be a father to my two sons and to be able to live in and enjoy the beauty of coastal North Carolina with my family. The rest of the story has been hard work, sunburns and a lot of chlorine.
