Hidden Gems: Meet Yolanda Robinson of Abide Inclusive

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Robinson.

Yolanda Robinson

Yolanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a trained clinical social worker who has moved through several large agencies and experiences, leading me to start my own group practice. The goal of my group is to provide access to quality mental health care for those in need, specifically the LGBTQ+ community though all are welcome. I got started at NYU with a strong desire to help and found my absolute passion in the therapy realm. This journey has led me from New York to Maine to Baltimore to Japan to Germany to settle in North Carolina. This experience has given me a wide variety of experiences and allowed me to understand my own needs to be the best therapist I can be.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not been a smooth road; there is very little financially accessible information out there for young clinicians to start their own group practices. We are almost all trained for agency work. I have had to learn almost all aspects of group practice and running a business the hard way. However, I am thrilled that I am able to make note of this and hopefully be able to provide support for younger clinicians who would like to learn how start their own business without having the learn ABSOLUTELY everything the hard way.

We’ve been impressed with Abide Inclusive, P.L.L.C., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Abide Inclusive has grown from just me to a total of 8 clinicians who work with a variety of ages and modalities. We have a talented art therapist who works with children and young adults to express themselves and process trauma with EMDR. We also have several talented clinicians who work with a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, neurodivergence, boundaries, and identity work. Our goal is to tailor your therapy needs directly to you, whether it be a significant life event or a desire to find ways to improve your functioning. We have also began the launch of a coaching service for parents and young adults/teens who are coping with ADHD and anxiety. This is to help the parents develop skills around how to support their child to be the most successful and contented person possible through the stressful process of going from high school to university. The partnering therapist works with the child to assure they have the skills necessary to manage difficulties, build independent living skills such as budgeting and scheduling, and negotiate the difficult path of moving from adolescence to adulthood. This program allows for a full team approach so the whole family can feel supported through challenging times.

How do you define success?
I define success by being able to leave my therapy room feeling as if I have done the best thing possible for my clients and the clinicians with whom I work. This also means that I have enough mental wiggle room to take a vacation every once in a while. A good therapist is a rested therapist who can focus on their clients!
