Hidden Gems: Meet Jennifer Salas of Jennifer Salas Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Salas.

Jennifer Salas, BSN, RN, NC-BC

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
From the moment I became a single mom at the age of 19, my life took a transformative turn. Raised in a household marred by alcoholism and emotional neglect, I was once a rebellious teen with no clear direction or purpose. But the birth of my son ignited a profound drive within me—a drive to give him the life he deserved and, ultimately, the life I deserved.

The year my son started kindergarten; I made a pivotal decision to enroll in nursing school. My lifelong passion for health and helping others led me down this path. Yet, during my years working in the bustling hospital environment, I encountered a moral dilemma. Our healthcare system often prioritized symptom treatment over addressing root causes, primarily linked to lifestyle. After eight years of bedside nursing, including the grueling demands of the pandemic, I found myself yearning for something more.

That ‘something more’ turned out to be nurse coaching—a role that allows me to work intimately with individuals, creating a safe space for them to uncover their goals, visions, and motivations for health and life changes. In our fast-paced society, genuine connection and understanding are scarce commodities. As a coach, I see myself as a vital part of the solution within our healthcare system, empowering people to make lasting, sustainable changes.

I opened my private coaching practice, Jennifer Salas Coaching, in December 2022. I offer one-on-one coaching and group coaching services, and I’m on a mission to introduce coaching into hospitals, providing much-needed support to healthcare professionals in caring for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Balancing the responsibilities of a single mother with the rigorous demands of nursing school was no easy feat. My family played a pivotal role in supporting me by helping to take care of my son while I pursued my education. To ensure I could focus on my studies, I humbly accepted assistance through public housing and food stamps, which eased the burden of working full-time during this critical period.

While still fully committed to my hospital job, I took the leap into entrepreneurship. Over time, I have scaled back my hospital hours. This transition wasn’t without its challenges and the continuous juggling act between work and family life. Nevertheless, the rewards have far outweighed the difficulties.

As a new entrepreneur, one of my most significant hurdles has been visibility. Recognizing the importance of guidance and mentorship, I made a the decision to invest in a mentorship program for the first year. This decision has proved invaluable, providing me with guidance, support, and community.

My journey as a single mother, nurse, and entrepreneur has been characterized by resilience, resourcefulness, and unwavering determination. While the path has been challenging, it has been undeniably worth every effort and sacrifice along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My mission is to serve as a guiding light and motivator and provide empowerment for my clients, helping them create the life they desire. Together, we embark on a transformative journey where we explore their deepest values, set meaningful goals, and confront the obstacles that may stand in their way.

My approach is holistic, considering the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. By addressing all these facets, I provide a comprehensive approach to well-being. I believe that true wellness goes beyond physical health, encompassing emotional and spiritual harmony as well.

One of the cornerstones of my coaching is mindfulness. Through mindfulness practices, meditation, and tailored breathing exercises, I equip my clients with the tools to manage stress and anxiety effectively. These practices are not just techniques but profound life skills that can transform how we navigate challenges.

Leveraging my experience as a nurse, I create a nurturing and judgment-free space for my clients. This safe haven encourages authenticity and allows them to confront their realities honestly. Together, we chart a path from where they currently stand to where they aspire to be.

My coaching is particularly beneficial for individuals who find themselves feeling stuck, lacking clarity, or struggling to prioritize their health and well-being. I specialize in helping clients overcome perfectionism, establish healthy boundaries, shift limiting mindsets, and effectively manage anxiety.

I extend my services worldwide, offering virtual one-on-one coaching group coaching sessions, as well as hosting both local and online workshops. What do you like and dislike about the city?
The things I love most about living the in Triangle area is how friendly people are and the cultural diversity. I enjoy being only a few hours away from the mountains and beaches and having the four seasons with a much milder winter than I experienced growing up in upstate New York. I dislike the humidity in the summer but am growing accustomed to it after 8 years in North Carolina.
