Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Tobin.
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I wasn’t born to be a 9-5er. I’ve always been a self-starter and fiercely independent, so entrepreneurship was the only option I saw for my future since I was a kid.
When I needed to create a career for myself that gave me location, time, and financial freedom, I immediately thought about what I have the most skills in doing and what I believe I can succeed in most. I’ve started and run my own businesses for the last 10 years (my first one being a wedding and event planning business in Savannah, GA, that I ran full-time from 2013-2017). I have experience marketing myself and my skillset in the online space and using social platforms to make money, so I decided that was the perfect shift to make, something I feel confident in doing successfully and something that would always keep my interest. Helping female entrepreneurs with a backstory – whether it’s a struggle, a strong message to share, or a desire to have their own financial identity – is my passion.
I’ve built businesses that have failed, I’ve built successful side hustles, and I’m officially 4 (going on 5) years working full-time in the creative social media marketing space, and I have no plans to slow down!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No way! I’m self-taught in everything I do. I went to college (University of Maryland) for one year with a track and cross-country scholarship but got hurt in my first year, lost my scholarship, and dropped out. I knew the traditional school system wasn’t for me, so I jumped into entrepreneurship headfirst and never looked back. That’s not to say it was easy – it’s a battle of mental toughness and unshakable self-confidence every single day when you’ve got a business to maintain and grow that solely supports you and your child. I’ve launched new products and offerings that have been failures, but that’s just the way it goes. It takes that deeply engrained feeling and the mindset of “I have no other option/failure is not an option for me” to keep pushing through because this is something that I love and that I’m made to do and to put out into the world. I’ve been burnt out, I’ve felt lost with the direction I’ve wanted to go in to expand my business, I’ve built out an agency and then dissolved it to be a solopreneur again…it’s all a wild journey, and that’s the exciting part.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I help entrepreneurs build a powerful online presence so they can show up with authority in their niche and monetize their social media.
I do this with my signature cocktail of storytelling, messy action, authenticity & creativity.
The process is unconventional, and that’s why it works. I’ll never use big-agency tactics like slimy and grimy marketing, cold DM-ing, or cookie-cutter content strategy, and instead, I’ll use all of the real, raw, authentic stuff that makes your brand stand out. Which is also what I’m known for!
I’ve had 4 years of successful social media conversions, monetization, and account building under my belt as a social media strategist and account manager.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Being outside, barefoot, exploring anything and everything I could.
