Meet Corey & Riley Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey & Riley Johnson. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Corey & Riley Johnson

Once upon a sweet adventure, in the heart of Raleigh, an entrepreneurial spirit was born. Corey, a dynamic 11-year-old, and Riley, his spirited 6-year-old sibling, ignited this journey thanks to a humble toy cotton candy machine. Little did they know that this plaything would spin their dreams into reality.

Their enthusiasm overflowed as they brainstormed ways to share their fluffy creations. The family’s grandmother’s restaurant and birthday parties became their first canvases for cotton candy artistry. And so, the seeds of entrepreneurship were sown.

In their youthful pursuit, Corey and Riley embarked on a quest filled with sugar-spun dreams. They ventured into vendor fairs and markets across Raleigh and Durham, sharing their delectable cotton candy with eager smiles. This endeavor not only delighted the taste buds but also nurtured their budding confidence, self-esteem, and the art of the perfect sales pitch.

As the months passed, their passion for entrepreneurship and innovative thinking blossomed like a cotton candy cloud. With each event, they expanded their horizons, spreading joy one sugary delight at a time.

Now, their exciting journey is reaching new heights as they prepare to deliver their first batch of cotton candy to a brick-and-mortar store, the Black Friday Market, this November. The future holds promises of growth and success as they plan to unveil a mobile cotton candy shop, taking their sweet treats to new corners of the world.

Corey and Riley’s cotton candy business is not just about satisfying sweet cravings; it’s a testament to the power of youthful ambition and the joy of creative entrepreneurship. Their story reminds them that dreams, no matter how sugary, can become a reality with hard work and a sprinkle of innovation.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating the world of cotton candy entrepreneurship as young business dynamos comes with challenges, and Corey and Riley have encountered a few sugary bumps along the way!

First off, there’s the challenge of juggling school, extracurricular activities, and, well, being kids. The clock only has so many hours, and they want to savor every bit of childhood magic without letting their business turn into a sugary chore. After all, we wouldn’t want cotton candy to lose its sweetness in their lives!

And then there’s the classic dilemma of being wholly bootstrapped. Growing a business takes time and resources, but Corey and Riley are like little sugar scientists, carefully crafting their dreams one spin at a time. Sure, they might not have a cotton candy-making rocket ship (yet), but that’s part of the adventure. Slow and steady, they’re building their cotton candy empire.

Ultimately, these challenges are like sprinkles on their cotton candy creations, adding a bit of flavor to their entrepreneurial journey. Corey and Riley’s story reminds us that even with a pinch of hurdles and a dash of schoolwork, their business remains a delightful adventure filled with sweetness and dreams.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As the proud momager behind Sugar Clouds and Co., I’m here to sprinkle a bit of my story into the vibrant world of cotton candy. My name is Ana Velez, and by day, I’m a marketing manager at the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, but my love for entrepreneurship has been a lifelong journey.

Growing up in an entrepreneurial household, I watched my mom’s passion bloom into successful ventures, and those seeds of inspiration were planted deep within me. As a young entrepreneur, I ventured into creating party favors, launched a girls’ spa party business, and even ran my own Etsy shop, crafting custom items. Those early experiences taught me the sweet taste of creativity, and I’m sure my children, Corey and Riley, have inherited that same entrepreneurial fire.

What sets me apart? I’m not just about business; I’m about pushing boundaries and standing up for my beliefs. I’m a fierce advocate for those who may not have a voice and a trailblazer in my own right. My most treasured achievement? Giving my children a solid foundation to be whoever they aspire to be, encouraging them to break barriers, and most importantly, love what they do.

In this shared adventure with my children, Sugar Clouds and Co. isn’t just about cotton candy; it’s about nurturing creativity, entrepreneurship, and the unwavering belief that you can achieve anything you set your heart on. As a family, we’re here to bring people along on our journey, showing that sweet success is best enjoyed when shared with others.
