Community Highlights: Meet David Schmidt of Green Beagle Lodge

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Schmidt.

David Schmidt

David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After deciding to leave corporate America and to take on an entrepreneurial venture, a broker contacted us with an opportunity to bid on a pet resort near Lake Norman. Our bid did not win, but we learned enough about the business to believe we could start our own facility much closer to home.

We bought land in Chapel Hill, designed and built the building, hired staff, and opened in 2014. We won the Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural “New Business of the Year” and now we are approaching 10 years in business.

In December of 2022, we opened our second facility, in Pittsboro right next to Chatham Park. Between the two, we have about 100 staff who are committed to delivering a Clean, Green, Safe and Fun experience to our guests.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been a number of challenges along the way – finding and training great Staff and the Covid pandemic to name just two, but we are strengthened by our purpose and renew our commitment every day to providing excellent service to our guests.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Green Beagle Lodge is a pet resort with locations in Chapel Hill and Pittsboro.

The Lodge provides Boarding, Daycare, Training, and Grooming services.

We aim to delight our clients.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Following the 1970 World Series, my dad took my brothers and I to see Brooks Robinson at a Harrisburg, PA car dealership. We were in a long line and when we finally got near the front Brooks apologized to the crowd saying that it was late, and he had to get back to Baltimore. We were crushed.

Through friends, my dad found a way to get us invited to the Orioles locker room early the next season. As little kids, we wondered around while our heroes relaxed after a game. Quite a thrill.
