Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaymee Mason.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Beaufort. Both sides of my family claim lineage here- and after stints away for college and some traveling, I knew I belonged back home. I married a high school sweetheart and lived to serve coffee in this area the last decade. I’ve worked both corporate coffee and small business. I’ve worked under the table part-time, and I’ve managed whole shops. After a lot of ups and downs I knew I had to bring my small hometown my vision of community in a coffee shop.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to small business ownership is 99% mental I’d say- any business plan or financing or ordering or implementation could only be done after getting past the idea that “you don’t deserve success.” I have always been hard on myself, and this first year has been the most challenging in becoming vulnerable enough to be seen trying and striving and succeeding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Historic Grounds Coffee Shop?
Small town coffee shop specializing in gourmet coffee & espresso, NC pottery, antiques, local artisans, specialty food items, and town gossip.
We are different in town because it’s a real community vibe. Not trying to turn over tables, not trying to rush you. We try and remember every customer’s name, but if I can’t remember it, I at least will remember your drink order! Where you can say “the usual,” I think outside of a bar setting that’s hard to find and the people of this town find it warm & welcoming. I really want to try as hard as I can to contribute to the ‘Mom and Pop’ establishments that this town desperately needs to hold tight to.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We use only the best ingredients, and consistency is key. Taking the time to connect with customers because this is a small town! That customer is your neighbor!
