Meet Chayanne Collazo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chayanne Collazo.

Chayanne Collazo

Hi Chayanne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born Chayanne Collazo in 1999 at Rex Hospital. Living throughout different parts of the triangle (Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill) growing up, I moved to Jalisco, Mexico, in 2010 following the passing of my mother and lived with my grandparents. This is where I initially found my passion for music. I returned to the United States in 2014 and graduated from Southern School of Energy & Sustainability in Durham in 2017. I first debuted under the name “YXNNE” in 2018 with the single “Cupido Mintió,” which quickly gained a following and amassed over 30,000 streams on SoundCloud. After releasing 6 more songs, I went into a 4-year hiatus due to personal issues at the time. I decided to give my passion for music one more chance, so I changed my name to Shyanny and released my newest single, “Indecisions,” in December of 2023.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life for me has not been a smooth road whatsoever; being a born mixed child (Father African American and Mother Mexican) has always come with its issues, whether it was feeling like I didn’t fit in anywhere or whether it was cultural differences. Following the death of my mother in 2008, my father was soon after deployed to Afghanistan. Due to this and other traumatic events in my life, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Depression in 2020 and have battling with it since. Though my life has been challenging and I have gone through many obstacles, I know that there is nothing that life can throw at me that I would not be able to handle.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer-songwriter, rapper, and creative. I am most proud of the fact that I am self-taught, and what I believes sets me apart is my ability to covey emotion and lyricism into both the English and Spanish language.
