Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua “Maui” Cabral.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey with motorcycles and photography began at a young age in Queens, New York. As a young man, I found myself captivated by the innovation behind a Harley Davidson, driven to capture moments that tell a story. This passion led me to become a touring photographer and aspiring motorcycle builder specializing in concert, landscape, action, portrait photography, and filmmaking, with a focus on crafting Harley Choppers.
On September 15, 2019, I was involved in a motorcycle accident that unfortunately left me in a coma, prompting a realization that there was more to life. Following my heart’s guidance, I dove back into childhood passions, which soon transformed into adulthood aspirations. I later returned to education to deepen my understanding of my passions and turn them into a fulfilling career.
As these passions came together in 2020, following the passing of my late dear friend Adrian Carl Hines and meeting my now-fiancée Nicole, I found inspirations that led me to start By Any Means—an apparel company aimed at funding my versatile shop. The graphic T-shirt I created found success not just in North Carolina but resonated with the motorcycle community nationwide.
In 2022, Nicole and I decided to slightly rebrand By Any Means, creating a brand that focuses on Harley repairs, customs, and photography/videography content creation.
Fast forward to 2023, following an invitation by Crucifix and Sean Paul East, I embarked on the “Scars & Stripes Reloaded” music tour featuring OverTime, Big Murph, and GR1M. Serving as their photographer and director/videographer alongside two wonderful creatives, Jeremy Pape and GR1M – Jon Wright, We filmed Crucifix and Sean Paul East’s music video “Love What Kills You.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Embarking on this journey, By Any Means faced its share of challenges. I launched the venture during a time of widespread shutdowns, grappling with material shortages from struggling distributors and the inevitable delays in apparel drops. Navigating through these hurdles made it tough to consistently engage with a committed audience.
Then came the tour—a 2 1/2-month stretch on the road, testing our resilience. With limited finances and miles away from the comfort of home, the grind was real. Despite the exhaustion, we pushed through, delivering exceptional performances. Balancing the hard miles on the road, I found myself editing photography and videos from previous shows, often immediately after performances. Even on supposed “off” days, we were scouting locations for the “Love What Kills You” shoot and managing inventory for tour merchandise, all while setting up for upcoming shows. It was a relentless cycle of staying busy, grabbing a few hours of rest, and repeating the process. What a ride it was!
Back in Raleigh, building a clientele for By Any Means’ photography segment has proven to be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. The area boasts numerous talented individuals, but I’ve dedicated myself to showcasing how “BAM” stands out with unique styles and innovative ideas.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I wear many hats—a photographer, mechanic, creative, artist, and content creator. It took a considerable amount of time for me to unravel the layers and realize that this is not just a collection of skills but my true calling.
My passion revolves around capturing and creating memories for people. Through the lens, I aim to craft beautiful riding films that showcase the unique perspectives of riders. But it doesn’t stop there; I delve into immortalizing significant life moments—engagements, weddings, birthdays, and various events.
By Any Means stands as more than just a brand—it’s a creative force that intertwines passion and purpose. At its core, By Any Means is a dynamic blend of craftsmanship and artistic expression.
Collaboration is at the heart of our endeavors. We’re currently engaged in projects with creatives across the country, pooling our talents to create compelling content for their social media, websites, and inventory appearances.
Beyond the digital realm, we aspire to create a physical space—a safe haven for like-minded individuals to converge. Picture skateboarders shredding the half-pipe, riders sharing stories over cigars while waiting for an oil change, and scheduled photoshoots in our in-house studio. By Any Means is envisioned as a one-stop shop, an unprecedented fusion of passions.
My recognition in the North Carolina motorcycle community stems from selling motorcycles to numerous individuals, motorcycle clubs, and organizations in my previous role. The creative apparel I’ve introduced allows riders to express their attitudes while cruising the roads. Engaging in various community initiatives, from toy drives to cancer walks, has been a fulfilling part of my journey, and I plan to continue contributing.
Our mission is simple yet profound—to come together and create. Whether through captivating photographs, innovative projects, or giving back to the community, By Any Means is a vessel for crafting memories and moments that will last a lifetime.
