Rising Stars: Meet Sanket Dikshit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sanket Dikshit.

Sanket Dikshit

Sanket, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born to an architect father and a textile designer mother, I inherited a keen sense of design from my creative lineage. Initially, my path led me towards architecture, following in my father’s footsteps. However, I felt a disconnection and an unfulfilled passion. It wasn’t until the COVID lockdown that I discovered my true calling in photography.

At the age of 32, with the responsibility of being the family’s breadwinner, I found unwavering support from both my parents and colleagues to pursue my newfound dream. I started by assisting photographers at various events, immersing myself in the craft. Motivated to enhance my skills, I applied to the New York Film Academy, where my dedication earned me a talent-based award.

Specializing in portraits and fine art, my time at NYFA deepened my understanding of capturing raw emotions through the lens. Now, as a freelance photographer and videographer, my business revolves around the sheer joy of capturing “PICTURES OF PEOPLE!” This phrase encapsulates my passion for freezing moments in time, showcasing the diverse and unique stories that each individual carries.

Despite the challenges of pivoting careers at an age where stability is often prioritized, the encouragement from my loved ones and the acknowledgment from the prestigious New York Film Academy fueled my determination. Today, I am not just a photographer; I am a storyteller, weaving narratives through the art of visual expression.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Well, even though I did face problems, I wouldn’t say that the road was ruthless. At one point, it was a nightmare to actually consider shifting my career and to start from scratch. I was 32 and in a way the breadwinner of the family when all this started. It would terrify me to go back to being a student in a foreign land and rebuild from the very bottom.

The most difficult part was single-handedly finding a house in a market that wouldn’t lease a home to international students.

The next challenge was to be a student in a class that ranged from 19-year-olds to a 33-year-old – me!

Post college, to be without work till connections were made and money could be made was difficult.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am delighted to introduce myself as a passionate Photographer and the proud owner of Sanket Photography, a venture dedicated to providing exceptional photography and videography services. My journey in the world of photography has been marked by significant milestones, earning recognition for my work at various stages.

My expertise shines through in the diverse projects I’ve undertaken, ranging from serving as a behind-the-scenes photographer for student films at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) to crafting my compelling thesis during my time at NYFA. Beyond academia, my portfolio extends to include striking model portfolios and captivating fine art images produced post-graduation.

A moment of great honor for me was being selected among a handful of distinguished ex-students to capture the essence of the New York Fashion Week’s kick-off event in September 2023.

Specializing in portraits and fine art images, I take immense pride in overcoming challenges throughout my journey. It is this resilience that has propelled me to the position I find myself in today.

What sets me apart is my ability to maintain a robust yet pleasing communication style. This skill proves invaluable in bringing out the best in my subjects, capturing nuanced expressions, perfect poses, and weaving captivating stories through my imagery. I am not just a photographer; I am a storyteller, and I believe this perspective adds a unique dimension to my work.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My dedication to effective communication and a relentless pursuit of improvement have been pivotal in shaping my photography journey. Immersing myself in the work of established photographers has not only inspired me but also pushed the boundaries of my creativity. This exploration led me to a mentor whose guidance, coupled with meaningful conversations, expanded my understanding of both the art and business of photography. Through this commitment to communication and continuous growth, I’ve not only refined my craft but also forged valuable connections within the photography community, contributing significantly to my development as a photographer.
