Today we’d like to introduce you to Persona Bell.
Hi Persona, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started playing piano when I was ten and studied classical piano and voice through college. I moved to charlotte from Minneapolis Minnesota in 2012. I had just gotten out of a terrible relationship that had been preventing me from taking the next step in my solo performing journey. I decided to start all over and tried working a 9-5. Working for a bank did not mesh well with my creativity and eventually I ended up teaching private lessons at a music school and have been there ever since! Once I started teaching, I began finding my love for music again. I also had been meeting a lot of musicians and started playing at events here and there. Fast forward to today, I have my own LLC, and I perform all over the southeast coast. I sing and play at weddings, corporate events, private events, holidays parties and more! I am also working on my first album and hope to release this year.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest struggles have been relationships. My music is often about relationships, but I am a private person, so it’s hard to share what I’m writing about. Some relationships have been really demanding and taken me away from my music goals. Finding the balance between spending time practicing, preparing for shows, and seeing my significant other or family is difficult. Not only the time but also the emotional fortitude. I need to be able to put emotion into my artistry, and that is tiresome. Also, of course, moneyyyy! Writing my own music cuts out some of the professionals I may have had to pay otherwise, but there are still a lot of other moving parts that need funding when it comes to releasing music.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I sing and play piano. I sing pop, jazz, smooth jazz, r&b, soul, classical. I can sing and play anything! That’s something that sets me apart from other musicians. I also can sing in Spanish and Mandarin. My favorite songs to sing are love songs. I absolutely adore singing ballads. I am super proud that I have sung with my Alma mater choir at the White House, Disney Hall, and Carnegie Hall. I am also very proud that I have sung at Bank of America Stadium in from of 65000 people.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I am not sure. I am hoping that there will be a shift back to music that makes you feel good. There has been a trend for a while where artist are just singing depressing songs and I think a lot of people are ready for a change.
