Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Wiles.
Hi Jill, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Three years ago, I became severely ill, to the point of being bedridden. My son is a full-time local firefighter. The entire fire department was incredible at looking after me, checking on me, and doing whatever they could to help during that time. After over a year of fighting for answers and finally finding the correct diagnosis, I started to function again. During that time, a local establishment became available. I opened a small pub dedicated to giving back to the incredible fire department and all first responders, including the military. Since then, we have expanded twice and have grown into a large venue that brings incredible bands and musicians to the area. It has been the most challenging yet rewarding experience of my life. I will continue to fight my medical battles daily, but Scallywags has given me the strength to fight through my bad days and the joy of helping others as much as I possibly can.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have a condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, also known as POTS. I struggle to function daily, but the joy I get in watching everyone having fun while being able to give back makes every struggle worth it.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Scallywags Surf City, NC?
I am the owner of Scallywags. We are a bar/event venue that brings great music to the area. We also have our food truck called The Galley. I also only hire First Responders or close relatives. We are family-friendly and create a fun atmosphere everyone can enjoy.
Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Not really. I do not have much free time. 100% of our merchandise goes back to the fire department in one way or another.
