Meet Carly Delengowski and Laura Brummett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Delengowski and Laura Brummett.

Hi Carly and Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
C: So, I’m actually from New Jersey. I ended up in Raleigh after college because I had family down here and was ready for a change. I quickly fell in love with the city and have been here for five years now. Previously to working at RALtoday, I worked in television. I was an avid reader and when I saw the open editor position — I hopped on it!

L: I’m an NC local (from a small town south of Raleigh) and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in Business Journalism. I lived in Raleigh for a summer during college, working for the News & Observer and when it was time to decide where to move after college, I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else. Even though I do love the work I’ve done in hard business news, I really was drawn to RALtoday because I wanted to engage with the local community and cover every single topic that’s going on in the city.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
C: Of course, there’s going to be bumps! I completely changed fields and at first, it was very scary. But it’s important to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

L: I graduated from college during a global pandemic; I think that probably qualifies as a bump, haha. I don’t think life can ever really be smooth (especially in journalism) but the bumps make the smooth times so much sweeter.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
C: At RALtoday, we create a daily newsletter, as well as content for Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. We focus on all things Raleigh — biz openings, good food, upcoming events, etc. I am most proud of the relationship we’ve built with our community. We have readers write in and tell us how they wouldn’t of known about something if it weren’t for us. We have such a great following of people and I think that’s also what sets us apart — that we form a bond with our readers and even ask them to participate in our content creation.

L: We focus on all things Raleigh, and what makes us as a company different, I believe is the way that we are a reflection of the community around us. I’m proud of the way that we try and diversify the content that we produce to include things that all types of people can enjoy. I’m also proud of the way that we tell the stories of Raleigh locals, community members, businesses, artists, + creatives that don’t always get a chance to share their voice. We are for Raleighites, by Raleighites.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
C: I am always absorbing other media sources. Some of my favorites are Bites of Bull City, Triangle on the Cheap, and NC Eat and Play.

L: I live + breathe media and news. I like to get the News & Observer app notifications to my phone so I can keep up with breaking news. (Reporters to watch over there include Jonas Pope IV for sports, Zach Eanes for business + Anna Johnson for politics.) I generally read pretty much every local news source/blog daily though, haha. Lately, I’ve been listening to the local podcast Hustle + Gather (https://www.hustleandgather.com/).
