Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Alexis
Hi Jade, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been an artist; as a child creating games from scratch and putting on curated performances with my friends. As I grew, I was introduced to new media and had bigger desires to create work with meaning. I have never locked in on one particular medium, but my work has always revolved around my relationship with myself and portrayed in a diary-like fashion. I love to explore new material to express ideas and deep feelings through words and symbolism.
In recent years I have been leaning into ceramics because I feel confident in it, and it’s motivating to really grasp onto something and become proficient. I journal regularly, documenting emotions, thoughts, and motifs. There has been so much growth between my clay skills, and personal research that I sense I am ready to get back into material investigation where I can play with these ideas and focus on creating pieces of higher caliber.
I strongly believe it is essential to give yourself time to evolve as an artist between creating collections of new work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is ever perfectly smooth, but I would not change any part of my journey. As an individual I have learned so much about myself and the world around me from the bumps I have encountered: Be open, but never trust anyone as much as yourself. Work hard, but not so hard you become burnt out; and always stay true to your values.
One of the biggest hurdles of what I do as an independent artist is taking complete responsibility of oneself. I am my own bookkeeper, event coordinator, accountant, scheduler, and representative. It is a mighty job and takes a ton of energy to maintain. I always feel like I am drowning, and I am unsure if that feeling ever goes away. The most important thing to take care of is my well-being and as long as I keep that at the top of my list the rest will follow (fingers crossed!).
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I mentioned, I have been researching within myself finding motifs in my thoughts and symbols that resonate with me. Motifs that arose have been femininity, domestic violence, blood relationships, the hard and sharp in relation to the soft and gentle. In my mind I have a series of symbols that I connect to these themes which come out in my work in conjunction with a limited color palette.
I am most known for combining iconic beauty with the grotesque. I get inspiration from the aesthetic of the 1950s with moments of gold, filigree, and the use of certain language. I also like to use the portrayal of women of this era in an ironic way. To highlight the strength and beauty of those who were suppressed for so long. I think a lot of people can relate to being restrained in one way or another. But then one day you turn around and say, “No more of this, today I take control of my life.”. My work expresses my journey into this awakening.
I am most proud of how transparent I have become through my work. It allows me to release a small amount of the millions of thoughts running through my mind and share them with the universe. I feel when I create a piece, I not only am being honest with myself, but I am also honest with everything around me all the way up to the stars. It is a liberating feeling that only can be given when I let go and give myself to my work.
What sets me apart from others is that my artwork doesn’t care if anyone relates to it. It is about me and that is why a lot of it is never completed or displayed. Its sole purpose is to move me forward throughout this life.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to connect with me is to reach out and be friendly. Send me a message and let me know what you think about a piece I made, or send me something you created, and we can talk about it! Conversation creates opportunities, strong bonds, and inspiring ideas.
I am always in the mood to collaborate and try something new so I welcome any and every media artist to connect with me if they feel an attraction to what I do and perhaps we could make some magic! I am best reached via e-mail (worksbyjade@gmail.com) or casually hanging out at a local music venue.
