Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Black.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Megan! It all started back in 2018 when my husband and I scheduled a cake smash session for our daughter’s first birthday. If you know anything about kids, then you know they’re UNPREDICTABLE! Am I right?! During the session, we may have gotten a total of two smiles out of that poor girl.
(Teething + no naps probably didn’t help the cause). We ended the session, packed her cake up, and left feeling defeated! I had an old camera lying around and decided to try my hand at photography. From then on, I fell in LOVE! I loved capturing the moments that meant so much to us and started doing some sessions for family and friends.
A couple of cameras, upgrades, and tons of sessions later here I am! Anything from Weddings, Maternity sessions, to first birthdays. You name it, I love it all. It’s almost been 1 year as a full-time photographer for me, in May it will be the one-year mark!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been pretty smooth so far! The only struggle I would say is owning your own business means you’re the one-woman show! Finding a groove to have that home life too, and not just work has been a struggle!
You just need to stick to your boundaries with scheduling yourself! Other than that it’s been pretty great! I can’t see myself going back to a 9-5 job!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer! I photograph anything from weddings to first birthday parties, families, and businesses!
You name it, and I have probably photographed it! I love doing this because of the people I get to meet, I have made some of the best friends by photographing. I am most proud of my photos making a cover issue in 2 different magazines with 2 different photos!
I’m known for making people feel very comfortable in front of the camera, I’m great with kids, and I have been told you can tell I am really passionate about what I do.
I have recently started collecting $5 from every session and donating the amount towards a charity! This month (April) will be my first time doing this! Gift-giving is my love language so I am so excited about doing this!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I can definitely say, I am a risk-taker!! I worked from home for a little over 6 years, and 4 for those years I was a part-time photographer… it got to the point where I knew something had to be done.
My husband could see that I was struggling with working full time and my photography was starting to get busier and busier. Staying up until 2 am most nights editing photos while juggling a full-time job, being a wife, and a mom to two kids!
He finally told me to quit my job and pursue what I wanted to do. The next day, I quit my job! That was a risk for me, knowing I won’t get that guaranteed steady income, but it was the best risk I could take!
