Check Out Shontel Wilkerson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shontel Wilkerson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all began after I gave birth to my daughter, McKenzie. She had such thick, long hair and it was “natural”. Being that I had relaxed hair, I had no clue what to do nor how to manage natural hair.

I didn’t want to hurt her or damage her hair so I began to research how to take care of natural hair. I eventually started to create my own concoctions and use them on her.

After seeing what they did for her hair, I too became natural. It was the BEST decision I could’ve ever made. Not only did I figure out how to manage our hair, but I created natural hair products in the process. My very own, hand-made products and I couldn’t be more proud.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I can say that I’ve had more success than bumps in the road.

Although, I must say, imperfections are how I was able to master the formula of my products. There were times when I was making curl cream and because I had just gotten the hang of creating it, my timing on mixing certain ingredients would be all wrong and then there would be a whole batch wasted.

Down the drain.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create natural hair and skin care products.

My products are created to help better manage natural hair for all hair types. My specialty is healthy hair. I am known for my hair and skincare line. I am most proud of my accomplishments of creating specialized hair and skincare products that help naturals to be able to manage and grow a healthy head of hair.

What sets me apart from others is the time I set aside for my customers to explain in detail any questions they have for me. I have to help my customers to trust me. When they trust me, they’ll trust my products. I let them know that I too have struggles and I’m not afraid to share them and how I get through them.

I tell them what works for me and what doesn’t. What people want is the truth. If I feel that my products do not apply to a customer’s situation, I give him/her my honest, professional opinion.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
In my profession, I am my brand. I can use my products on myself and become a walking business card.

This is how I network. You have to do what’s best for you and your business. Be creative and do something out of your comfort zone. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find.
