Check Out Steve Epstein’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Epstein.

Hi Steve, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Apart from being a divorce lawyer in Raleigh (31 years into practice), I’m a true-crime author. I began writing as a midlife crisis in 2017, in 2019 published my first book, MURDER ON BIRCHLEAF DRIVE: The True Story of the Michelle Young Murder Case, and last year published my second book, EVIL AT LAKE SEMINOLE: The Shocking True Story Surrounding the Disappearance of Mike Williams, I actually narrated the Audible version of EVIL AT LAKE SEMINOLE. I’m currently working on my third book and am pretty sure I’ve found my new passion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. I “queried” over 60 agents on my first book and didn’t even get a nibble. Very few even responded, and most who did respond sent form emails. I was fortunate to latch onto a small publisher in Oregon who expressed interest and published my first two books. Fast forward to June 2021, when I landed a top-notch agent for my third book, who will soon be marketing it to New York publishing houses. The old adage that the road to success is paved with failure is so true. But you just have to stick with it, keep honing your craft, and if you are persistent and a good learner, anything truly is possible.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from other true crime writers is that I’m a lawyer and a divorce lawyer at that. The crimes I write about are usually related in some way to a couple that either should have gotten divorced or did. The bad blood in their relationship, sometimes involving in-laws, turns deadly. I love writing about what happens in the courtroom, and as someone who has tried a few dozen cases, that background allows me to tell that story in a way non-lawyers really can’t.
