Community Highlights: Meet Campbell Davis of LouElla Wine Beer & Beverage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Campbell Davis.

Hi Campbell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For me, LouElla is the culmination of more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality and beverage industry. I began washing dishes and bussing tables as a teenager. Eventually, I worked my way up to waiter/bartender, and finally Management in my early twenties. I spent my twenties and thirties at some of the best and most noteworthy establishments throughout Durham. Some of those included Hutchin’s Garage, Guglhupf, Rue Cler, and Durham Catering Company. Utilizing the relationships I had fostered over the years, I decided to try my hand at Wholesale Wine distribution, taking a position as a Sales Manager for wine distributor Bordeaux, Fine and Rare throughout Durham.

Eventually, I took a chance at owning my own business. I sold everything, took out loans, and built what was to become my dream bar/retail shop on Geer Street in Downtown Durham. Named after my Great Aunt LouElla, this business is a nod to my family heritage and upbringing. She was much beloved for her warmth, hospitality, and generous spirit. I built the bar, hung shelves, and laid tile to create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for all who visit.

I wanted LouElla to feel like Downtown Durham’s neighborhood bottle shop, bar, and event space offering curated wine, craft beer, and fortified selections from family-operated producers. Whether serving you at the bar or helping you pick that perfect bottle to host your celebration, our mission is to share the same hospitality with the community, just as my Great Aunt had done for so many others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been a smooth one, but it has also taught us a lot. Just fifteen days after our first anniversary, the global pandemic hit, and we had to shutter our doors to in-store shopping and service. Like many, we pivoted to make sure we stayed afloat. Thankfully, the neighborhood and our regulars rallied around us once we began offering curbside pickup and online shopping. We’ll be forever grateful for their support. Who knows what could have happened had they not stepped up for us.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Always be open to new ideas, never stop learning, and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. With this mindset, we hope to continue growing within the community, becoming a staple within downtown Durham for years to come.
