Community Highlights: Meet Mariah Jeter of The Pretty Girl Parlor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Jeter.

Hi Mariah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, where do I begin? I am a 27 year old Floridian who has always had a passion for beauty. It all started when I was 12 years old when I realized my love for the beauty industry. I always knew I wanted to own my own beauty bar. Not just any beauty bar though. My dream was to not be confined to four walls but to take my skills to women’s shelters and safe houses. At the age of 12, I didn’t know why I wanted to impact those two places specifically but I knew I wanted to be an impact in the women’s community through beauty. It was March 2018 when I went on a mission trip to Thailand. While being over there I was able to visit safe houses and women shelters and that’s when I realized why I wanted to be an impact to women outside of the four walls of my beauty bar. I realize that those women probably would never have the opportunity to be able to treat themselves to something as simple as a facial or even a brow wax.

I wanted to be able to provide top-quality services to people who otherwise would not have the access to these luxury experiences. I did not know how this was going to happen but I knew one day my dreams would become reality.

In 2018, I decided to enroll in college to pursue my Bachelor’s degree because I knew obtaining that would allow me to open my business and get the necessary licenses that I would need to be successful, but those plans ultimately changed. My life took a turn that I was not expecting and I ended up dropping out of college. I went into a deep depression and didn’t know what I was going to do next.

I began to struggle with myself and doubted everything I ever dreamed about. I looked at myself as a failure. My dreams never changed but my vision became blurry. 3 years later, March 2021 when I decided to no longer look at all of the bad but understand that nothing would change unless I changed first. I had to trust and believe that God had something better for me.

It was then that I decided to enroll in the Aveda Institute and go through the Esthetician program. This was an industry that was growing rapidly, and I had the opportunity to obtain my tattoo license and do PMU. But, I knew that this was not my final destination. I drove four hours, three days a week for a total of six months, and every day I reminded myself why I was going through this process and how important it was to reach the finish line.

I knew I did not want this to be another situation where I started something and didn’t finish. Six months later in October of 2021, I achieved my first major goal and this was probably one of the best days of my life. It was the day when I was able to say “I DID IT!” I had accomplished what I set out to do, and that was to get my license. Fast forward to the present day: On April 18th of 2022, I was finally able to turn my dreams into reality.

With the help of my parents “The Pretty Girl Parlor” was able to be birthed and placed into a space where I am able to grow and flourish. I thank God every single day for all of the doors He has opened for me and every new client that enters my beautiful space because it is a testament to all he has done for me. I know if it was not for Him I would not be where I am today.

The Pretty Girl Parlor isn’t just any beauty bar but it’s a space of no judgment. A space where you can freely open up, relax, and be pampered.

When opening “The Pretty Girl Parlor” I wanted to make sure it was a peaceful calming yet fun environment where anyone who came in for a service knew they could be themselves, feel comfortable, and knew when they left, they would leave feeling better than they came.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been easy, absolutely not? Is it worth it, of course?

I think my biggest struggle right now would honestly be patience. Understanding things don’t happen overnight. It takes a lot of sleepless nights and consistency but I truly believe all of my hard work will pay off.

It’s only been 3 months and I must say I’ve done a lot in this short period of time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed Esthetician who specializes in full body waxing while also offering brow services such as brow lamination and henna brows as well as vajacials.

There are plenty of Estheticians in the RDU area but I must say it’s all about the customer service and the quality of the work. I truly believe because I am a perfectionist I take that into my services and time with my clients. I treat all of my clients the way I would want to be treated and provide them with the quality service I would like to receive.

You will never leave The Pretty Girl Parlor feeling rushed or like you received anything less than 5stars.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
If I had to choose one lesson out of many I would have to say my biggest lesson is to not give up.

Don’t stop dreaming, don’t stop pursuing. Every day wake up knowing you will be 1% better than the day before.
