Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Schneider.
Hi Martha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started as a teenager in retail clothing and loved connecting everyday with customers. I continued working in fashion for years. Along the way, I was opening retail stores for companies, running and re-merchandising them while renovating and decorating our own houses and helping friends with their design projects. After we landed in Raleigh, I worked with builders on spec houses and took on clients with their renovations and interiors. It was then that I realized that there was no place in Raleigh to get great furnishings. Going back to my passion for retail, I opened La Maison. I wanted La Maison to be the place where you could get great art, lighting, high-end furnishings and a collection of curated accessories and still have the option of hiring us for your design needs. As the years went by, I added Trellis, the floral shop, to allow customers to feel like they had everything they needed to have a beautiful home.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, it’s been a smooth road for me leading up to the pandemic. Raleigh has welcomed La Maison with open arms and our customers seem to enjoy coming back for new and interesting art, florals and furnishings. The pandemic caused an interruption for sure, but we continue to grow everyday and are still committed to providing beautiful things for our customers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
La Maison / “the home” – A place for entertaining and unwinding, your home should be a space for gathering with loved ones as well as a space to rest and relax from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. La Maison is an expert in gathering fine furnishings and home accents that are as luxurious as the streets of Paris yet functional and practical for family-friendly living. Our team of experts will guide you through this process, whether it’s decor or furniture, to transform your home into the dwelling place of your dreams.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
For me, I am never afraid to ask for help or advice. Mostly, I connect with those around me in Raleigh that have small businesses. It’s important to create a community where we all support each other. I learned early on in retail that sticking to your strengths is the most important thing to do for your business. Don’t worry about the competition or who’s doing what…people support your business because of what you uniquely bring to the table. Stay the course, stay in your lane and continue to put the customer first.
