Community Highlights: Meet Nia Nelson of The Stylish Mom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Nelson.

Hi Nia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I still have so far to go but I am extremely proud of where I am today. I was born and raised in Oxford, NC. Super is a small town but it’s home. I attended and graduated from Winston-Salem State and I also completed a few courses at Meredith college. That being my paralegal certificate. I currently work within the Mortgage industry.

I realized a very long time ago that I did not want to work for anyone else but myself, of course, unless it was something I really enjoyed doing. I later discovered that my passion was helping others. I am currently a Mortgage Officer and I have only 2 e-commerce companies. For those of you who are tech-savvy, that simply means online businesses. My first business quickly becomes a 6-Figure business within a year. I can proudly say my most recent business, is on its way to doing the same.

If you had asked me questions about my business last year, I would’ve been too ashamed to talk about my first company. I let life get in the way of $150k a year. I’m human and I’m still learning. The good thing is that gave me the motivation to rebrand and restart. That’s what I’ve done for my first company and I’m proud to say it will be relaunching in March of 2022.

The Stylish Mom is a business I created to help mothers regain their confidence after having children. I had no idea I would completely let myself go after I had my daughter. Now what I mean by that is, that I just didn’t care to get dressed. I was a new mom, I was living with my daughter’s dad at the time, so I still had to attend to him and then a business owner.

I didn’t realize putting myself together and looking and feeling good were a part of self-care. So boom, “The Stylish Mom” was birthed. I am too terribly proud of this brand that I’ve built in 10 months and I’m even more proud that I can tell my story and hopefully inspire another woman or mother.

We are 10 months in and we have over 17k followers on Instagram, we’ve had 200k plus visitors and hits to our site and we are still growing. It’s a beautiful thing to witness. Taking an idea and turning it into a successful brand.

I am a single mother and I want my daughter to know and understand she can accomplish anything in life. ANYTHING. But you have to put the work in. Anyone who knows me knows I shut all the fun stuff down and I get straight to business.

I am the sole provider for my child, I am a full-time corporate employee and I own and operate two businesses. My daughter is my motivation to keep going every day. I want to show other women that, yes, it’s hard sometimes but when you’re focused and hardworking, you can achieve anything.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest thing that I’ve had to adjust to is being a single parent. I rarely speak about my personal life because it happens. Things don’t always work out how we plan.

It’s now a smooth road because I make it a smooth road. I focus on things I can control. I am blessed to have an amazing support system, who at the drop of a dime, will come running if I or my daughter needs anything.

I am very vocal about my situation now, because I want another woman to know it’s ok. I never get into details but I can proudly say I do the damn job. My daughter lacks for nothing and she’s loved. That’s all that matters.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Stylish Mom?
The Stylish Mom was created after having my daughter. I felt like I didn’t care about self-care. I created this brand for moms like myself who may be feeling unlike themselves. You go through so much mentally, emotionally, and physically when you have a child. I did not realize this until after becoming a mother.

TSM is a lot more conservative than most boutiques. It’s a lot of stuff that I wouldn’t wear now that I’m a mom. I am a representation of my daughter so to speak. You can be classy and covered. You can still be sexy and covered. So we offer dresses (sophisticated and club attire), loungewear, tops and bottoms, and jackets. That’s how I set this brand apart from other companies.

Sex sells and I feel a lot of boutiques owners may think that’s the way to gain customers but for me, it’s the opposite. It’s so cool having male customers shop for their girlfriends or wives knowing I can find her something sexy but still conservative. If this all makes sense.

You also do not have to be a mom to shop. The goal is for all women of any age, race, size, and shape to know they have options and can shape with our company. We offer amazing customer service, faster shipping, and quality items at affordable prices.

What I’m most proud of… Ummm, I didn’t let the failures of one business stop me from building a new business. I implemented the same operation with my first company, and TSM took off.

What do you think about happiness?
For an extremely long time, I’ve always wanted love. I grew up in a 2 parent home. My parents were high school sweethearts and they have been together ever since.

So you can imagine what I mean by wanting love. That’s what I was raised on and all I knew how to do was love. I wanted unconditional love and once I had my daughter, I finally got to experience the true meaning of unconditional love. Ava makes me happy. Truly happy.

I have someone to spend my entire life with. Someone who loves me for me. And all she wants from me is love. She is my everything. Aside from her, seeing my business grow and my family and friends happy, makes me happy.
