Conversations with Deidra Craig

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidra Craig.

Deidra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started blogging a few years after I finished my undergraduate studies. I’ve always liked writing, mainly short plays and short stories and a few poems here and there and I occasionally kept a journal, but nothing too serious. Back in 2015, I wrote a post about my natural hair care routine. I didn’t think much of it. In fact, I was planning on shutting my blog down because it really wasn’t going anywhere and this young lady who was following my blog wrote me this very kind letter saying how I was such an inspiration to her and that my post really helped her get a handle on her haircare routine. At that point, I felt obligated to keep sharing more about my beauty routine. I’ve since then expanded into sharing lifestyle content, content on motherhood, styling tips, vintage and thrift shopping and how to dress and make your Instagram feed more colorful.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think anything I do is ever smooth, LOL. I get these random bursts of inspiration and energy to change the world and make things better and then realize that some things take time, which includes building your audience, an authentic audience that appreciates what you have to say. I’m still not where I want to be, but the audience I do engage with are people who genuinely care about the content I work hard to create. I just want to help people and build a strong community of people who share my interests. So, no, there has been nothing smooth about my journey. I battle with myself everyday but have slowly learned that good things take time and I’m willing to wait if that means at the end of the road what manifest is something truly beautiful.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My blog focuses on three main pillars: 1. Positivity & Body Positivity. 2. Motherhood. 3. Living Life in Color and finding color in your city.

All three pillars encompass how I truly choose to live my life and thats in color. I love my city and it’s so very colorful. I love to share tips and tricks on how to find color in your city, even when there isn’t much to work with. This is how I truly live life in color and my IG page really shows that you can take some not so pretty places and make them beautiful and colorful and I love sharing how anyone can do that in their own cities.

I’d say I’m known for my smile, upbeat energy and ability to be your best friend after one conversation. When you visit any of my social pages, the goal is for you to feel lighter, happy and full of joy. I think joy is truly contagious and I feel confident that I do a great job of transferring that joy to all of those who visit my social pages and those I meet in person. Additionally, I want women to know that all body shapes and sizes can and should absolutely dress in all colors. I want women to feel bold in their fashion choices and have the freedom to dress comfortably in any color they so choose.

Lastly, I’m a new mom, more specifically a black mom and I choose to celebrate all the facets of black motherhood and show how beautiful it is raising a beautiful black daughter.

Any big plans?
I plan to cut all my hair off and start fresh. I feel like every time I’ve cut my hair real short, it’s a metaphor for cleaning up the clutter in my head to make room for fresh ideas and new ways to make an impact in my community. I’m not sure when I’ll do it, but I always get this itch right before I know it’s time and randomly wake early in the morning, call my hairstylist and she instantly knows what I need and just goes for it.

I’ll of course, continue blogging and representing brands that really speak to me and the message(s) I’m trying to get across, but I hope to really dive into blogging and being an influencer on a deeper level. I want to continue to grow my audience and host a dressing-in-color event sometime down the road. With this event, I hope to invite some local speakers and local fashion/hairstylists to come out and teach women to dress and style in the right colors for their shape and skin tone. I hope to help empower women and really help them be bold in expressing themselves through colorful fashion and style.
