Conversations with Mat Griner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mat Griner.

Hi Mat, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been cooking BBQ for as long as I can remember. I started to compete professionally back in 2012. My passion for cooking BBQ only grew stronger and January 2017, I decided to leave the company that I had been with for 22 years to start my food truck/catering company. It’s been a great ride ever since and have been very blessed to go a lot of places and cook for a lot of people.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely struggles along the way.

BBQ is one of the most popular foods with lots of great restaurants and food trucks so the competition is great. We have been fortunate to have some REALLY good mentors in BBQ and it has lead us to providing something good and different to each of our customers.

Covid really kicked us in the butt at first. We lost every event we had planned for the year in a matter of a week and a half. It literally took me a few days to process everything and get a game plan. We put the Food truck full steam ahead and thanks to all of the support from our customers, we were able to make it through Covid.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Pitmaster and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

The things I’m most proud of:

– Being Voted in WRAL’s Viewers Choice awards as Top 5 Best BBQ AND Top 5 Best Food Truck.

– We were featured in March on the Discovery Channels Moonshiners Smoke Ring a BBQ cooking tv show where we stuck to our roots and cooked a traditional Eastern NC Whole Hog.

– We recently were a part of the Jack’s Old South Team in Memphis, Tennessee where we won the World Championship.

– We just got back from the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament for the second year in a row feeding all of the anglers of the tournament for two nights. This was a huge deal for us and we have Gregory Poole Marine to thank for it.

– Most of all, I’m proud of all of the support our customers have showed us from the food truck, catering corporate events, and catering the birthday party in the backyard. The trust we’ve built is just amazing.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Don’t sell yourself short. Work hard every day.

I work really hard at providing the customers with the best BBQ I can…
